My Score 117/160 FFVII vs. SMB3

I'm not entirely convinced about Crono necessarily being a 1-seed. Crono is weaker than his game, yes? And checking the stats over at sc2k4.com (makes it sound so professional! :p ), so far he's finished in 6th and 7th, making him a definite 2-seed, which feels right to me.

Oh. My. ****ing. God. It's done, but man was it hard. So many games that look like they got the shaft - when you have three 16-seeds that look more credible than Metal Gear or Secret of Mana, you know your bracket is strong. (And the fourth one is there just because a game contest couldn't be complete without it.) Please consider that before bashing, K?

So, here we go... though I might make some changes at a later date, because I find this bracket a tad too predictable.

NOTE: No games coming out between the end of this contest (today) and the beginning of the next one (Fable, HL2, Halo 2, etc.) are included. I think this is good because it shouldn't turn into a GOTY poll - in a Spring 2002 Contest FF10 would've killed almost everything short of FF7 or OoT, for example. Also their to-be popularity is really hard to gauge; Halo 2 could flop and turn into a DMC2 for all we know.

Pac-Man doesn't deserve a 15 seed it lost alot of ground due to SFF with the SMB3 vs. Metroid match I say it deserves a 10/11/12 seed

Same with Pokemon getting a 16 it lost alot from the FF VII vs. Xenogears match I say it deserves a 10/11/12 seed as well

If I didn't take that into account, METROID would've gotten that 15-seed, and Pac-Man would've gotten in for the same reason as Pong. Oh, and its match with Metroid wasn't close either.

Same for Pokémon, except Xenogears got killed worse - and not by SFF.

A nice bracket, I'll comment on a couple things...

I like your list of #1 & #2 seeds.

I think one of the Megaman games cound get as high as a #6 but no real complaints about them being too low.

Putting Marvel vs. Capcom 2 as a #13 was perfect. I actually envisioned it as a #12 or #13 if it got in this contest.

Okay, Pong is the "must have for completeion" then. GSC over SoM? I don't think that's how an actual match would turn out. Quake, I'll agree, even though I don't like FPS games. And it could still lose to SoM pretty easily... Doom > Quake for vote getting and SoM >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Earthbound. F-Zero GX? GX? Are you joking, or are you stoned? If you put plain old F-Zero in I'd consider it a legit entry, but GX isn't as good for its generation as the original was for its. / (7) Sonic 3 & Knuckles - Right, but get rid of SA2 and the &Knuckles part since Sonic 3 was orginally created as a single cartridge ad likewise for S&K. That may be the very reason that Sonic 2 got in in the first place, and we have no reason to break the rules in a second tournament. 1 cart with many games = many games, 2 carts that can be played as a full game on their own = 2 games. Rules must be upheld.

No, HM, the strongest games deserve to be 1 seeds, they don't need to be. For all intents and purposes SMB3 will perform as good as a 1 seed as Lttp would as long as LTTP doesn't turn out to be the 2 seed of the same division. Sure, it's top point would be one of the weaker ones in the contest, but variety is the spice of life, or something like that. Some people will be sickened to see two Zeldas atop the lists, and will be less turned off if ANYTHING, even SMB3, gets a 1 seed before a second Zelda.

the change i would like to see made to the summer contest:
sort the divisions not by company or random chance...but by previous strength in the contests.

there would still be 64 characters and four divisions.
but those divisions would be heavyweight, middleweight, lightweight, and newcomer.
the characters in all four divisions would be chosen by nomination...and the newcomers would be seeded by nomination as well.
but the 48 most popular returning characters would be seeded by their past performances.

this would make for a great number of close matches throughout the tournament.
the heavyweight division might still be predictable...but the rest would be very interesting.
of course, the heavyweight winner would most likely win the tournament...but the proposed company based brackets would lead to the same situation anyway.

i am working on a bracket for this, but it is...harder than i thought.
so first...does anyone like this idea in the slightest?

I would like to see a team tournament...basically 2 characters on a team at random. We could get an unpredictable contest, and the battles will also be interesting. Also, Link/Cloud/Sephiroth wouldn't be a guaranteed champion if they had really weak partners. Perhaps it could use 128 characters, with 32 characters in each division, seeded 1-32. From that, 1 seed would join up with the 32-seed, the 2-seed with the 31-seed, etc. That way we'd still have 63 matches. I don't know how you'd exactly seed the teams, though...

Actually, I'd bet that'd be because Magus, if not the old G'dorf, get into the heavyweigth braket. Same reason Zero doesn't make the finals, or Aeris... but then agian, Aeris would probably miss the Heavyweigth bracket, get stuck in the mid-range of the lightweight bracket and then end up being the one in the finals unless she had to face Cloud in the Semis. That's Ceej for ya, though.

In the case of a tie based on total points, I separated using the tiebreaker guess. A big congrats to Ulti for coming out on top not only amongst the Gurus, but also worldwide. Way to represent! And wow, would you look at the gap behind him... that's too bad, as I think it means we're only going to end up with a single Guru listed in the final Top 50. But at least we managed to take the best position!

But what I found most amazing of all was the incredible average score we manged to put up together. Check out this number:

Average Expert Final Score: 138.13%(!)

The current GameFAQs Average is sitting at a very low 84.20%, but that number is not yet taking into account everyone who's about to score another 32 for themselves once FF7 officially takes this thing. Still, that number is going to climb only into the mid-90 range, making the accuracy with which we predicted this year all the more impressive.
