It seems amazing, but the 2003 contest off-season topics managed to get even more posts than the actual contest discussion. 2,000 off-season posts. Wow.

I'd like to personally congratulate Slowflake for that success and commend all of the hard work put into maintaining the discussion. Good job.

And of course mad props to everyone who contributed to any of the discussion topics. To quote Slowflake: "Go us!" ;)

Alright, enough preamble. Slowflake wanted me to resume the discussion topic, so here it is. I'll start up a stats topic once we have some real numbers to play with, but until then there's plenty to speculate on.

Might you consider running an Oracle Challenge for the spring contest?

I helped to save the final topic of last summer's Oracle Challenge for you ^.^

Perhaps it has something to do with the contest lasting two months, and the off-season lasting six. ;)

...Guess what had to be said so far was said. We'll have to wait until the bracket comes out to stir up some real discussion.

Expect me to make a super-long post once it's out, for one.

What about Chrono Trigger? When it comes down to it, Crono is just another mute hero who's only really liked because of his appearance. And Magus is by far the most popular supporting character on this site, and the only one to hold a candle to the hero of his own game... I expect CT to blur the cards. Probably not win, but do better than expected.

With the monster number of predictions it's getting FROM AN ANTI-SQUARE BOARD? I really doubt it. Crono getting a 4 last year... well, the reason was obvious.

And Magus a 13.

Hey, it's Ceej, the man who kicked out Strider and let Raziel, the one who gave Kirby a 9-seed raise, the one who gave Pac-Man a 5-seed... he's not someone to rely on.

Hopefully he'll learn.

The seedings get better as the years pass... if he's looking for other sources, it will take some biased bizzatch not to have CT near or at the top.

Well, 2K3 seeeding was ages better than the 2K2 one, I give you that.

But he's seeding GAMES now. Not characters. Who nows the screw-ups he's able to do.

We can only sit down and wait.

Also, will any "weak" game get in, outside perhaps Zero Wing? Maybe Superman 64, if it gets enough noms...

Hurrah, new discussion! I've been waiting for this topic. First off, one more link that might be of use, as we get ready to see how the bracket ends up looking:

Summer '03: The Great Game Contest - http://www.bracketmaker.com/scripts-bracketmaker/tlist.cfm?tid=35931

The results aren't something I'd be willing to base my entire prediction on, but they should serve as a useful starting point, giving us at least a little something to go on. Obviously, the views of this board are not going to perfectly represent the GameFAQs majority, but like I said, it's something.

Oh, and there are a few neat stats in my Archives, might be worth looking at. But mainly, I want to make everyone aware of the contest Rodri is running right now, where we're attempting to predict all 64 of the game nominations.

http://cgi.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.asp?board=8&topic=12829992

Some of the discussion regulars have made their submissions, but we could use a few more before midnight tomorrow.

Hey, solarshadow.
Glad to see you're back.

I was goin' to e-mail you to get your ass back here since I hadn't seen you at ALL since last summer. But guess you do come around often....

Welcome back.

Well, as for the Spring contest....I'm indifferent.
There isn't any ONE game that I'm 110% behind like I am for Mega Man.
There are going to be SO many great games that choosing just ONE to root for is straight up impossible.

Super Mario Bros. 3, Chrono Trigger, any Mega Man game, any Zelda game, a few Final Fantasy games...man.....it's just impossible.....

Who do you guys think the "upset specials" could be?

I say Final Fantasy X and The Sims could definitely pull off some unexpected wins.

Oh and if I'm not mistaken:

Pac-Man is the only previous Summer Contest Character who will have a game with the exact same name in the Spring Contest (assuming Pac-Man, gets in, which it should.)

Good to see you, solarshadow!

Anyway, not too much to discuss yet, but here's what I've been thinking about:

Nintendo: Plenty of Mario games. Super Mario Bros. 3 is a shoe-in, and I hope to see Super Mario RPG and possibly Super Mario Kart, my favorite racing game of all time. There's also Super Mario 64, the definitive 3D platformer.

The contest would be a travesty without The Legend(s) of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time, both considered to be two of the most superb games out there. Super Metroid and/or Metroid Prime will kick as much butt as Samus. Wind Waker, Majora's Mask, and SSB:M are also good Nintendo picks.

Top 3 to watch for:
1) Super Mario Bros. 3
2) Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
3) Super Mario 64

Possible Bracket-Buster: Don't see any surprises here.

Square: A virtually limitless amount of games are possible -- hopefully, they will be limited. Count on Crono Trigger to make an appearance, though I'm frightened to see where it's seeded considering the track record of the characters. Other possibilities are Xenogears and Kingdom Hearts, though I don't think either is a certainty in the bracket considering the amount of competition they have from their own company.

Okay, so let's talk about Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy VI would not be unexpected but the most talked-about game thus far has been Final Fantasy VII, which had two characters in the finals last year and is a heavy favorite to win. Most discount Final Fantasy VIII but I would recommend caution; it is not nearly as hated as most people think. Final Fantasy IX (the one I like to pretend never existed) is possible, though I hope not to see it. Final Fantasy X is about as certain as Final Fantasy VII considering the place it has held in the top ten FAQ list for ages. I think X-2 would be out of place considering its superb competition, but you never know with Ceej. Sadly, I doubt that Tactics will make the cut but I can still hope.

Top 3 to watch for:
1) Final Fantasy VII
2) Chrono Trigger
3) Final Fantasy X

Possible Bracket-Buster: Final Fantasy VIII

Other RPGs Xenosaga is close to my heart but I realize it doesn't have much of a chance to go far against more popular games. The one RPG in this category that could go very far is KOTOR, depending on how much its Xbox and Star Wars origins hurt it. I guess if you consider Diablo II to be an RPG, it could be here, too...

Top 3 to watch for:
1) KOTOR
2) Diablo II (ugh...)
3) Xenosaga

Possible Bracket-Buster: KOTOR

Other non-RPG games: Top of the pile in this category are the Grand Theft Auto games. They have a massive following on this site, especially considering they aren't RPGs. One or both of them are guaranteed a seat in the contest.

A possible bracket-buster is Pokemon, whatever color it is. Pikachu sucks, but I spent 300 hours of my life (at least!) on Pokemon. I was young! The game itself is bound to do far better than its stupid, useless yellow rat representative has in the past. Everyone likes Mewtwo better.

Donkey Kong Country could also go far, although DK's performance isn't very promising. Then again, it's harder to equate character performance to game performance outside of RPGs, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'm not an expert on the Castlevania series but I suspect that Symphony of the Night may do well. Devil May Cry was a great game that I hope makes it into the bracket. I'm also a PC gamer, so I'm rooting for Starcraft to make it in.

Top 3 to watch for:
1) Grand Theft Auto III or Vice City
2) Pokemon
3) Donkey Kong Country

Possible Bracket-Buster: Anything in this category. The non-RPG games will likely be highly underestimated in general.

I can't wait for the bracket to come out. Anyway, some of the wildcards in tthis contest I see initially are Super Smash Brothers Meele & any of the Mario Kart games for near obvious reasons. But I think the biggest wildcard in this contest will be Soul Calibur 2. Now I know some of you are thinking 'It's a fighting game & this is Gamefaqs.' But if past PotDs mean anything, then I'll point you to three of them.

1/2/2004 -- BEST OF 2003: Best GameCube Game (3rd behind WW & MK:DD!)
1/6/2004 -- BEST OF 2003: Best Multiplatform Game (Overwhelming 1st place finish)
1/7/2004 -- BEST OF 2003: Game of the Year (4th behind WW, FFX-2, & Star Wars:KotOR)

The fact that this game is so well received despite it's genre makes it a definate question mark come bracket time. It could be anywhere from a Sweet 16 contender to a 1st round flop. (Though I doubt the latter will happen) Anyway, once the bracket is set, I'll have a little more to speculate.

I would expect somewhat of a showing from Halo.

Also, I'm unsure of how well GTA will do, considering Tommy's showing in the Summer Contest. Of course, it not has a larger Xbox fanbase.

Nintendo: This is a category that will be very strong in the old-school category, decently strong in the new-school, and a wild card in the middle ground. It's safe to say that there will be at least two "real" Mario games, most likely SMB3 and SM64. Two Zelda games as well, with who knows what joining OoT. The Mario spinoffs (Kart, Tennis, Golf, RPG) should be middle seeds if they get in. As far as other titles, we could see a Metroid game do well (more likely than not Super Metroid), Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!, and perhaps even a Kirby title.

The big wildcards will come from the lower seeded Nintendo entries. SSBM could sneak in under the radar with most fighting games' looking at SF II and SC II. An unlikely game to make it is StarFox (64), but it could very well become a dark horse and the sole shooter title. And let's not forget Animal Crossing...

Square: No one's quite sure how many Square games will actually get in. There are only two "locks" - the dynamic duo of FF VII and CT. After that, it's anyone's guess. On the old-school front, expect another SNES RPG to make it, being one of the 3 FFs or Secret of Mana. Tactics and FF VIII are reasonable picks for middle seeds if they make it, and Xenogears has an off chance of getting in.

Square has two potential major wildcards that aren't expected to make it, but could be a spoiler a la Aeris. One is Kingdom Hearts, that which gave Team Square a big boost last year. The other is very, VERY unlikely to make it, but you just never know. Einhander is a game that some Square fans might not even know is theirs, as it's not an RPG. But shooter fans call it one of the best for the Playstation.

Capcom: Capcom's always been about the franchises, and this will hurt most of their entries in the SpC. Street Fighter II is a virtual lock for a top 3 seeded position, and could give Ken his first legitimate win in a contest here. The Blue Bomber could be limited to one spot, or he could take one place per series. I expect MM 2 and MMX to get in, but as middle seeds at best. An off chance is a Breath of Fire title getting in, but I doubt that, and it would be one match and out for it.

If Capcom's going to play the role of spoiler, I think it's going to be the Resident Evil series that does it. Slipping under the radar (thanks to a rather weak showing in SC2K3), RE 2 could score an upset win or two.

Konami: The big two of Konami's SpC arsenal are Metal Gear and Castlevania. It's not unrealistic to think that both Metal Gear Solid games could make it in, and perhaps even the original. Castlevania can draw on the original making it (possibly), SotN getting a high seed, one of the GBA titles getting a spot (Aria of Sorrow, most likely), and perhaps even Dracula X as the ultimate dark horse of the series.

Strangely, it's the third tier of Konami's lineup that I feel has the best chance of all of success in the tourney. Suikoden (choose your number) seems to have a good draw here. Like FF, they're RPGs on GameFAQs. Like every non-Nintendo/Square games, they don't have a huge amount of anti-voters. Suiko 2 and 3 could surprise a lot of brackets, if they get in.

Everybody Else: As far as I can tell, everyone outside the Fabulous Four goes into the tourney with at least one strike. Vice City and it's predecessor have a bone to pick, and could even get an (undeserved) 1 seed. Tetris represents the puzzle genre (heaven help us if Tetris Attack gets in), Soul Calibur 2 the new-school fighting, Halo the Xbox, Sonic (whichever one gets in - I can't see 2 Sonic titles in the tourney) for Sega. Don't underestimate the power of the PC, either. Starcraft, Half-Life, Diablo 2, Grim Fandango. Each of them possible Sweet 16 titles.

As for potential bracket breakers, I can see an obvious choice - Zero Wing. You see, unlike the dialogue, Zero Wing isn't a bad game. With joke votes swelling the totals, ZW could take a victory.

Meh, I never bought Pokemon being an RPG. It's borderline. Yeah, I guess Diablo 2 fits that abhorred hack 'n slash category or RPGs that never should have existed. My favorite RPGs are ones like Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and Planescape: Torment but this is GameFAQs and they don't have a prayer of making it into the contest.

This is mostly a tag, for the BEST. CONTINUING TOPIC. EVAR.

anyway, the question to be asked going into the new contest is whether the whole thing will be mostly "us talking to ourselves" or whether the fame and fun of the whole setup will attract new people to the site, if only to vote and leave. i suspect hope for the latter is a big reason these things are happening. if that happens, predictions will become a lot more difficult. otherwise, let's round up the usual suspects and have at it.

Count the number of reps from the Sonic series in the SC2K3. Now count the number of reps from FF7 in the SC2K3. Now notice that 4 > 3. 4 Sonic reps, 1 Sonic game? You must die.

I had to cut my disclaimer to fit that whole thing on. Basically, it said that my opinions probably aren't 100% accurate. I said that there would probably only be one Sonic nomination, since there are fewer games to choose from among the Sonic games than there are Mario, none of them are RPGs, and a fair number of Sonic fans don't like his move to 3-D.

Sonic 1 and 2 should definitely get in. And if CJayC puts S3&K as one entry, it's an absolute lock. That's your three games. And I think we might see SA2. (Remember Shadow's matches?)

Off-topic, and on-topic at the same time, I got SH yesterday, and I like it better than S3&K up to this point. Except for Tails' voice acting... it might come back to haunt him next summer.

True, but there are people who really liked the new games (see Shadow whooping Wario's ass? Couldn't have happened without SA2). As for the old games, we have Sonic 1, 2, 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Throw in SA1, 2, and Heroes, and you have a big enough pool to pull out several Sonic games.

none of them are RPGs

SC2K2 Final: Mario vs Link

Were the Mario and Zelda series RPGs? Are the original Megaman games RPGs? Is Metal Gear Solid an RPG? No. So that has nothing to do with it.

and a fair number of Sonic fans don't like his move to 3-D.

And again, a lot of people do. If they hadn't, Wario would've destroyed Shadow, and Shadow wouldn't have had the chance to send us into chaos when he got 45% vs Mario. If this had really hurt the Sonic characters, they would've done worse in the Summer Contests, and Shadow would've never gotten in.

Bear in mind I don't mean to insult, but point out why I do not believe your points.

Yeah..I definitely liked the 3-D change. I also don't think Sonic would have made the Elite 8 in SC2k3 if his change to 3-D really hurt him that much.

As I said in my topic (in case you want to further discuss it), I doubt Chrono Trigger will get as far as many people think. It should definitely make the final eight, but only with luck will it make the final four.

Perfectly all right, swirl. The more I think about it, the more I agree that there will be more than one Sonic title. Keep in mind that I was thinking ahead to the PC portion when I was writing that. I actually just added in Sonic as an afterthought, figuring that there would be something seriously wrong if I ignored one of the contest's most important figures. I still think that four is too much, but two would be good. S3+K and Sonic Adventure II for me, I guess.

Let's face it, if either Mario or Sonic got only 1 game each, it would be a travesty to video gaming. Anyone remember the old NES (SNES)/Genesis wars with Mario and Sonic clashing off? God knows what would happen without Sonic to contest Mario and Nintendo as the dominant figure in the video game industry.

That travesty already happened. *points to Mario in SC2K2* It got a lot of complaints... then the next year, there were five Mario characters.

Ok, he isn't so much involved in Mario games anymore...but still, there were technically two Mario characters. But yeah, that sucked big time. At least Mario made it to the finals, pwning Square big time. That was worth the absence of Bowser, Luigi, etc.

I think Goldeneye will be interesting to watch, seeing as it's up against OoT as far as nominations go. How will its "legendary" status among console shooters carry it?

Other games I'd like to see here are Crazy Taxi and Battlefield 1942, but I seriously doubt it seeing as Soul Calibur ties up the DC votes (and various other arcade nominations aplly themselves as well), and PC's up in the air.

What do all of you think about the "Nostalgia factor"?

How big do you think it really is?

Did it play a part in the previous character contests?

Personally, it affected my voting for the characters somewhat, but I'm sure it will be the driving factor of how I vote in this contest (or I could just pick the one I like better between two games I've never played before).

Sorry to double post, but another franchise worth watching might be Metal Gear Solid. With upcoming games (MGS3, TTS), Snake may just pull a fast one on some other franchises.

in the character battles, there was a nostalgia factor - it was an "anti-factor". ask lara croft...ask pac-man. in the summer contest, it was "what have you done for me lately"

the idea that games come from all systems might build in a "nostalgia factor" as far as getting in to the field [again, depending on those mystic "other sources"] but, once the contest begins, i think that recency will rule once again.

Personally, I think the nostalgia factor isn't HUGE, but it still may carry some older games during the early rounds.

I think nostalgia affects games more than characters. GameFAQers can hate Mario the plumber all they want, but if the great Super Mario Bros. 3 goes up against something like Final Fantasy VII, then people who would vote for Cloud over Mario might decide to go for SMB3. Odd theory, but who knows?

Some random thoughts.....

-Even before eyeing the bracket.....and barring they don't play one another in the same division, Final Fantasy VII and Chrono Trigger will be in the Final Four......BOOK IT!

-Many gamers who are rooting for the old NES era games are going to be sorely dissapointed......
I don't believe old skool NES is appreciated here, thus, not giving those games a vote out of "respect" by many gamers.

-Gamers who are rooting for the "new kids on the block" aren't going to have much fun either. Let's face it.....if you put Vice City up against Chrono Trigger today, too many memories are going to flood in from CT then they are for FFX.....

-RPG's aren't going to dominate as much as people think they will. As stated before, I see 2 RPG's in the Final Four......TOPS....

-I expect the game that wins will be from the mid-late SNES era to the beginning of the PSX-N64 era. Too many classics in that time frame to NOT make a huge impact in this tournament and possibly win the title....

-Many voters (as well as myself) are going to go ****in' nuts trying to vote for ONE game and ONE game only....
Again, some of these games being nominated are the best of the best and the latter rounds are just going to be too difficult.....
