There hasn't been an official release concerning the condition of the victims, but rumor has it that one died on the spot and the other is at the hospital in super-critical condition. I can't verify either of these things, but it seems plausible.

I was in the shower at the time of the shooting, and my roommate was asleep and didn't hear anything. Apparently it was two floors up from us in one of the crossover lounges.

Alright, this is getting out of hand.

Apparently after the dorm shooting (west campus), there have been several more shootings behind an academic building on the north side of campus. My friend is in his architecture studio and can see the SWAT team from his window.

I'm in a classroom on the east side of campus, so I think I'm good for now, but I'm not going out for bit anyway.

This is all at Virginia Tech, btw. I couldn't find a news link, but I guess one will be up pretty soon.

(CNN) -- One person was killed and one person was wounded in a shooting on the Virginia Tech university campus in Blacksburg on Monday, The Associated Press reported, quoting a state government official.

The gunman is still on the loose, police told CNN.

Student Matt Waldron said he did not hear the gunshots because he was listening to music, but he heard police sirens and saw officers hiding behind trees with their guns drawn.

"They told us to get out of there so we ran across the drill field as quick as we could," he said.

Waldron described the scene on campus as "mayhem."

"It was kind of scary," he said. "These two kids I guess had panicked and jumped out of the top story window and the one kid broke his ankle and the other girl was not in good shape just lying on the ground."

Students were instructed to stay indoors and away from windows, police at the university said.

"A gunman is loose on campus. Stay in buildings until further notice. Stay away from all windows," read a warning from the university.

The shooting occurred at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a co-ed dormitory that houses 895 students. The dormitory, one of the largest residence halls on campus, is located near the drill field and stadium.

It's kind of slow time when you're locked in a building.

As for being scared, not really. I think that the gunman is pretty well contained on the north side of campus. However, if he comes to Donaldson Brown, I'll do my best to get the drop on him. I'd rather die trying to protect innocent people than of old age. I won't do anything stupid, but I think I have a better chance than most people at taking him down to China town.

The person who was outside was my friend, Jenna. She was in the classroom around the hall and came to see if someone was in here.

I want to know what kind of weapon this guy had. I heard them talking about how he could've had a pistol, with 15 or so rounds, and multiple clips. I don't think that could be possible I mean someone would've had time to rush this guy or something I would hope. Of course it would be scary as **** and maybe he aimed specifically for the males, but damn how could this happen. >_<

This is why I'm lead to agree with that one state senator or congressman that was talking about his bill to allow qualified teachers/staff to be armed in schools. It sounds like a crazy idea and would've most certainly NOT have been passed, but you can't help but wonder if it would've done some good in this case. If anything it would probably lead to more school shootings, though.

No, the 2 psycho kids with shotguns were hazards to the kids, and cops were sitting right outside the library and could hear kids screaming and being shot inside, but the SWAT team entered from the other side and had to go through the entire building before they got there. Thats BS and if I was a cop I would have got my own team, if not just myself to go in there and deal with 2 emo kids firing from the hip. I'd bet on the cop in that fight.

They killed 12,13? with shotguns and pistols, most at point black range as they hid under tables. They weren't marksman, police should be allowed to take whatever steps neccesary to save even one life, even if that means not knowing whats happening when they enter the building. The red-tape rules that the police had to follow cost innocent lives.

It is also thought that there was an automatic weapon used during this such as an AK47 but I guess an automatic pistol could've been used but they would've needed tons of cartriges.

I was an RA. We didn't have a front-desk type area in our dorms (you needed a key to get in, in theory), so I didn't have to verify each person as they entered, but if I happened across an unattended visitor I was supposed to make sure he had a reason to be there.

Shooting at Virginia Tech / Statement by President Charles W. Steger

The university was struck today with a tragedy of monumental proportions. There were two shootings on campus. In each case, there were fatalities. The university is shocked and horrified that this would befall our campus. I want to extend my deepest, sincerest and most profound sympathies to the families of these victims which include students There are 22 confirmed deaths.

We currently are in the process of notifying families of victims. The Virginia Tech Police are being assisted by numerous other jurisdictions. Crime scenes are being investigated by the FBI, University Police, and State Police. We continue to work to identify the victims impacted by this tragedy. I cannot begin to covey my own personal sense of loss over this senselessness of such an incomprehensible and heinous act The university will immediately set up counseling centers. So far centers have been identified in Ambler Johnson and the Cook Counseling Center to work with our campus community and families.

Here are some of the facts we know:

At about 7:15 a.m. this morning a 911 call came to the University Police Department concerning an event in West Amber Johnston Hall. There were multiple shooting victims. While in the process of investigating, about two hours later the university received reports of a shooting in Norris Hall. The police immediately responded. Victims have been transported to various hospitals in the immediate area in the region to receive emergency treatment.

We will proceed to contact the families of victims as identities are available.

All classes are cancelled and the university is closed for the remainder for the today. The university will open tomorrow at 8 a.m. but classes will be cancelled on Tuesday. The police are currently staging the release of people from campus buildings.

Families wishing to reunite with the students are suggested to meet at the Inn at Virginia Tech. We are making plans for a convocation tomorrow (Tuesday) at noon at Cassell Coliseum for the university community to come together to begin to deal with the tragedy.

Had they rushed him, some would be shot and likely killed at that range. Yes, they would have probably succeeded in taking him down with less deaths. They didn't know for sure he'd shoot them, hostage situations take place all the time with nobody killed and in those had people went after the gunman people would have died. As well, it's a safe bet none of them wanted to be the first to make a move against him, as they would be the first to be shot at.

It's easy to be brave online, wait until you're faced with the situation before you judge their lack of action.

It hasn't been confirmed that they aren't connected though has it.
It just doesn't make any sense that someone would shoot a few people at a rez that has 8500 people in it, and then go across campus to a building that has classes in it and start UNLOADING on people there.
You'd think the person would stay in one place, as opposed to doing minimal damage in one location and then catastrophic damage in another.

2 hours is enough time for somebody to return home after hearing news of the other shooting and arming themselves. Maybe they got the idea? Or the fact that one shooter went through with it, they may as well too.

Of course it could be that it was one shooter, he got away, and looked in the second place for another person, perhaps finding him/her there when the shooting started again. Maybe he didn't mean to shoot random people but had a target the second time, but his gun was spotted and a fuss was made that sparked it.

How their minds probably worked: Do what he says and maybe we'll live.

Had they rushed him, some would be shot and likely killed at that range. Yes, they would have probably succeeded in taking him down with less deaths. They didn't know for sure he'd shoot them, hostage situations take place all the time with nobody killed and in those had people went after the gunman people would have died. As well, it's a safe bet none of them wanted to be the first to make a move against him, as they would be the first to be shot at.

It's easy to be brave online, wait until you're faced with the situation before you judge their lack of action.

Absolutely. Actually I don't mean to say they're "wrong" in not trying to stop the gunner. Indeed this is totally normal and sensible. Who would want to risk their lives if they have a glimpse of hope in living? Still it's sad.

In such times, indeed it takes great bravery to do "stupid" things for the greater good. Reminds me of United 93.

Witnesses said it sounded like the shooter had a handgun, but that's the kind of carnage that you would see if someone had an assault rifle. But a Glock 17 can carry 32 round clips, has a fast fire rate and is relatively easy to handle. But 9mm rounds don't have that much stopping power, this guy must have been experienced in handling guns. 29 people? Damn.

Reports of dead are ranging from 20 to 29, shooters from one to three, and I haven't even heard if it's confirmed that all suspects are dead or in custody.

Not necessarily. If you walk into the average dorm and just start going room to room shooting, you could take out a hell of a lot of people very easily. Don't know if that's what happened, but it's not like the place would empty out after the first shot is fired.

Wait, so it was the same shooter, two hours apart? Did the police lose him? Was he hiding?

I think that's still unclear right now. Earlier, CNN reported that the school was put on lockdown right after the first shooting and taken off lockdown a short time later. After they were taken off lockdown is when the second shootings occurred.

I don't know how much truth is in that but it was reported.

At the rez hall, there is only one death and less than 5 injured.
TWO hours later, there is another shooting with 20 more dead and 15+ more injured.
Just seems...to weird that the first shooting was so "small" in comparison to the other.
You would think that the shooter (if it was just one) would have killed more people at the rez hall instead of just shooting a few people and then treking half way across campus to shoot up some classrooms.

Mind you, the whole "whoa conincidence it was two different shooters, not connected" also seems completely messed.

My battery died and I couldn't find anyone with a similar ac adapter. I'm back at my dorm now, although I'm getting ready to go crash at my sister's apartment. I'm kind of in shock and just want to like...kill something. Lots of people are packing up to go home.

Here's what I know.

Asian kid comes the my dorm looking for his girlfriend (maybe to kill her, I dunno) and can't find her. It sounds like the fatality from that shooting was the RA for that floor and we don't know why...he could have been attempting to stop the shooter. The RA is also black and openly homosexual, so that could have had something to do with it, purely speculation. I don't know about the other person that got shot there.

2 hours later, the dude walks into a classroom in Norris Hall (engineering class building) and opens fire. All the shots that were heard were semi-automatic, about a second apart. I don't know how many rooms he went into, but with a kill count of 20 something and more than that critically injured, he was a pretty good shot to do all that with only the 50 something shots heard. There aren't any reports of a major shootout with the police or anything, and he apparently killed himself before police reached him. Prior to this, a few people were arrested simply because they fit the description, as a safety measure.

It sounds like a few people jumped out the third or fourth story (I can't remember how many stories there are) window of Norris, miraculously none of them were really majorly hurt, but still some broken bones and such.

Campus is quiet, everyone is pretty reserved. Lots of people waiting for rides and such. Anyway, pray for everyone on campus and for the families of the victims, or if you don't do the whole praying thing, just your thoughts and cares will help immensely.

PS It really sucks that my first really successful topic was about massacre of innocents.

The officer that did the press release I saw said that they think it was only one shooter, but that really can't be verified.

It only takes ten minutes tops to walk from the Dorm to Norris, so if it was just the one guy, he had some time to think things through. I don't know if that means he went home and got more ammo, or just kind of chilled somewhere.

If it was two, that would seem to mean that the second one was inspired by the actions of the first one, or that it was purely coincidental that they decided to murder innocent people on the same day.

I'm an advocate of the single shooter story.

I hesitate to answer you, because I know from past dealings that your statements and arguments are not always tempered with logic and common sense.

From an investigative standpoint, one must look at anything that could be a motive. Since the guy is dead, it's going to be hard to get a confession out of him. The victim has attributes that have been motives for shootings in the past, race and sexual orientation. I'm in no way justifying the shooting by those things.

I'm sure you are aware of these facts and that you are a miserable troll, but I may as well clarify in case anyone else legitimately mistook my meaning.

Like I said earlier, people will be talking about this for decades to come. I woke up this morning and was angry because I overslept and missed class at my community college. If I had been at Virginia Tech, it would have been a blessing to miss class.

The scary thing is I have a friend whose other friend's girlfriend is on the campus and no word from her. Even scarier is that in 2004 when I graduated alongside my best friend, he wanted most to attend Virginia Tech. If he had been there during this, I would have gone crazy.He ended up not going because he couldn't afford it.

I pray for Ellipsis and Matrick and hope they find a way to cope. I pray for the victims, the victims' families, and for this world because we just saw the worst and I hope we never have to again.

I'll just repost the one earlier so you don't have to search for it.

"My battery died and I couldn't find anyone with a similar ac adapter. I'm back at my dorm now, although I'm getting ready to go crash at my sister's apartment. I'm kind of in shock and just want to like...kill something. Lots of people are packing up to go home.

Here's what I know.

Asian kid comes the my dorm looking for his girlfriend (maybe to kill her, I dunno) and can't find her. It sounds like the fatality from that shooting was the RA for that floor and we don't know why...he could have been attempting to stop the shooter. The RA is also black and openly homosexual, so that could have had something to do with it, purely speculation. I don't know about the other person that got shot there.

2 hours later, the dude walks into a classroom in Norris Hall (engineering class building) and opens fire. All the shots that were heard were semi-automatic, about a second apart. I don't know how many rooms he went into, but with a kill count of 20 something and more than that critically injured, he was a pretty good shot to do all that with only the 50 something shots heard. There aren't any reports of a major shootout with the police or anything, and he apparently killed himself before police reached him. Prior to this, a few people were arrested simply because they fit the description, as a safety measure.

It sounds like a few people jumped out the third or fourth story (I can't remember how many stories there are) window of Norris, miraculously none of them were really majorly hurt, but still some broken bones and such.

Campus is quiet, everyone is pretty reserved. Lots of people waiting for rides and such. Anyway, pray for everyone on campus and for the families of the victims, or if you don't do the whole praying thing, just your thoughts and cares will help immensely."
