A big round of applause for superangelo128, Menji76, SpikeDragon and NGamer64, our tireless workers who entered 90% of the brackets this season. (And a golf clap for Wiggumfan267, fett1001, and nintendogirl1, who didn't complete the pages they were assigned but did enter SOME brackets.) All in all we gathered an astounding 250+ entrants for this season- easily a new Guru record!

As for the features on the site, you're probably used to most of them by now, but here's a brief overview in case you want to refresh.

* click any user's name anywhere on the site to see their full bracket

* you can re-sort the main page by score (default), TB, risks, their pick in the current match, Dead/Alive status, or even alphabetically by username- just click the headers

* currently "Today's Pick" is pointing to Match 12, Okami vs NMH. if you'd rather see everyone's pick for the next match, change the dropdown to "13" and hit the button- now you see all the picks for ToS vs RE5!

* any pick anywhere on the site that goes against the Guru Cookie is rewarded with red text

* speaking of which, the Guru Cookie is a bracket that makes the most "popular" choice for every matchup, based on all 250+ brackets. it's listed in the rankings as though it's an actual person, but that's just for fun (it doesn't actually cost you a position on the ranks if you're currently behind it)

But surely the most popular feature of all are those Guru Stats! You can check them at any time by clicking "Matchup Stats" on top, which takes you to

Noticed a mistake in my bracket. You pegged me as Twilight Princess > Dragon Age:Origins. Seems I filled my bracket when I was drunk because I've got DA:O winning that match so I'm 2 points higher than I should be.

I had Galaxy winning over TP anyway. That part is correct. I just noticed a 2 points disparity with my bracket and I found the match that was different.

Regaro, I never said it was right to see weak games from popular series beating great games from other companies. But Nintendo has the worst lovefest bias on GameFAQs by far, especially anything Zelda.

Okay Karo, I double-check and the elimination is legit.

If Z1mZum gets all his picks correct and any pick you two have he doesn't is wrong, here's the max score :

Z1mZum - 397
theawesomestever - 395
PrinceKaro - 385

And he since he has Diablo II winning, the MGS4 win will clinch the elimination for theawesomestever. You have a better score right now and you put more distance in the next round than the theawesomestever. But After Round 4, every match is exactly the same for him and theawesomestever . You, however called Metroid Prime > Fallout 3 while they have Fallout 3 > Metroid Prime. That's 16 points more for them and that eliminated any lead you have in Round 3-4..

Oh God... so far, every match I got wrong I had that same game losing in the next round, so I've been pretty happy with my results specially since I haven't been up for elimination yet. I was afraid on the MM/GSC match results as I had MM going 2 rounds further (quarterfinals). This time I have MGS4 going to semifinals!! I'm going to be pretty much screwed if this goes on.

That's a very good question. The stats on this one:

Metal Gear Solid 4 - 239 (93.73%)
Metal Gear Solid 2 - 9 (3.53%)
Diablo II - 7 (2.75%)

HOWEVER, Bacon's bracket has a winner of either Diablo or SotC, so maybe he'll save us yet. But if you don't count him, the last time we had a 0% result was...

* Wow, 14 picked Charizard over Bowser/Sora, more than I thought. It would have been 0 if he could have beaten Mario afterwards.

* Dang, even though only 7 picked Mizno > Crono, all 7 backed him again against Yoshi. And 2 even had him over Seph.

* Looks like 0 people predicted Kirby to reach the Sweet 16 of the 2008 Contest.

Haven't looked over the 2009 Game results though.

If MGS continues to get about +15 votes per update (as of the :42 update) it would take the lead I think right before midnight, if I did my math correctly.40 updates to make up 600 votes at 15 votes an update and there's just about 40 updates left

Ry, I dunno if you're out there, but here's our situation:

I hold a minor lead after this match, one that only breaks ties. Whoever gets more of the 8 match points here will win our head-to-head.

my pick vs your pick
(1) Fallout 3 vs ---
(1) HL2 vs MP, and then (2) more in the following round.
(1) Brawl vs Melee
(1) --- vs MM, and then (2) more in the following round

So what had looked VERY favorable if I won with GSC now looks considerably more iffy. I expect to get Fallout 3. Brawl/Melee is only one point. This is going to come down to HL2 vs MP, assuming your MM goes as far as you predict. If it doesn't make it to the semis, you need MP to win; however if it does, I need HL2 to win two rounds.

I doubt anybody else can touch us so long as Twilight Princess is still in. Only a few people have TP losing in the finals, and they can't otherwise go up by 64. I don't think anyone else can go up by 96. It's you and me, buddy. It would be nice if we could be settled before TP faces Smash Bros, but that would require things going completely in one person's favor. Either way, go team TP.

Now that my bracket is dead, I have to admit something.

I actually had MGS4 over FFX in the semi-final. LOL. It was such a dumb pick that I thought I didn't make it when I submitted it to the guru.. then I checked my actual bracket and slapped myself. At least Pokemon lost and eliminated me, if I lost a prize because of MGS4 I would have been really pissed at myself.

That kind of thing is why we definitely need to double check that the winning bracket is actually on the leader board with the correct score (you guys probably already do this). Otherwise someone can fail to mention a correction until the match comes around, and if their incorrect guru gets it right they can continue to not mention it, or if it's wrong they can post a screen shot with the correction.

Shame on you Darunia. Several people benefited from wrong picks and yet still were honest enough to admit it. Even despite being so low and having zero chance being found out, I personally noticed a 2 points boost in my guru and found the match that was off to have it fixed.

I'm as good as dead if HL2 doesn't win this. I would need to have EVERYTHING mathematically go in my favor from there on out to not get eliminated by Ry. That means Brawl over Melee to regain the lead, and then both Majora's Mask and MP losing their next matches so he can't take it back. Not bloody likely, but you better believe I'll be pulling for Wind Waker.

I will not be amused if I end up getting eliminated by my melee vs brawl pick after all. My goal was simply to survive that match, and go down when TP finally lost.

I have found that ALL the brackets who picked Majora's Mask to reach the finals have either Melee or Majora itself winning. Therefore, I need Majora's Mask to make the finals followed by it LOSING to Brawl in the final! Additionally I will need Prime to take out Fallout next round........

There are other unlikely scenarios where I could still win the Guru challenge, but this seems to be the most likely one.

But, maybe someone would beat me in this case, too, since I didn't calculate this super carefully.

Whiscash beats me automatically if Fallout 3 beats Prime next round. Even if MGS3 beats SOTC next round Wishcash is guaranteed to beat me. Thus, there is no "most likely" scenario with Prime losing to Fallout. =P

I liked seeing my elimination score go up :) Also, the match won't even happen for what.. a couple weeks still?

Anyway, it wouldn't matter in the end as the top guru will undoubtedly be in the top 5 of the contest. We'd know if someone's score was off.

Also, is the guru even about matching your own bracket? The one I submitted to the guru is the one I intended and had from the beginning because MGS4 was a dumb pick that I knew would screw my bracket as soon as I clicked "view my bracket" during the first match.

Though I guess someone could abuse this by making opposite picks from their bracket in the guru submission, and if it's wrong, post the screenshot proving they got the match right in their gamefaqs bracket.

I think if Wind Waker ends up getting to FFX you'll be fine, since everyone either has GSC or MM getting out of that division. You are technically safe until Majora wins another match.

Up for elimination for the first time this contest. I guess I knew it would happen sometime, but I always hate it. At least this is Round 4 and not like the 04-06 contests where people were being eliminated Round 1. I just remember, who was the guru that got eliminated in the second match of the contest?

Anyway, Oranejo, I wish you the best and my the best bracket win. No matter who wins, we have done on heck of a job getting this far in the contest. I am glad that if I have to be eliminated, it will be in a head to head match. *Shakes hands*

I will feel bad losing in this match because I debated this match for so long, and had melee in it for the longest till the last minute and I changed it to Brawl.

3 hours till the biggest match this contest season.

Like I said to the guy earlier, since it is still technically possible for something completely out there to win (say, Kingdom Hearts 2 for instance) that no other guru took, you are technically safe probably until whatever game you have winning's next match.

I think i should've already been eliminated. Looking at Enohp and my brackets, the only way i could overtake his 1-point lead on me would be if MGS3 lost to MGS4 this round or GSC next round, and both of those games have been eliminated...

Ry, I'm your only competition. Twilight Princess wins, it's one of us unless we fall 96 points behind the top leaders before the semis. Twilight Princess loses, it's not. So eliminate me and all you need then is a Twilight Princess victory.

To eliminate me, either MP or MM must win in the quarterfinals. Meaning you need two MM wins or one MP win. I have a 10 point lead after Brawl wins. I'm basically dead in the water now, so you can only gain on me. The first Majora win brings us within 2, which isn't enough, but either game in the QFs is 16 points, which would do it.

And also, I'm noticing a 1 point discrepancy between my bracket and the guru. Guru says I have 153, when I actually have 152. I took GTA4 over Pokemon DPP. This doesn't actually affect my chances to win or lose, but it needs to be pointed out.

I've been up for elimination each and every match since Fallout 3/Halo (plus KOTOR/FFIX and GSC/MM), and as I see it I think I'll be up for elimination for the remaining matches as well. Together they eliminated you, one has WW in the top 8, the other has MM. One of them will surpass you in points and you have no way to make that up.

I was going to recheck it, but then my computer crashed, and it took a while to get back up...

Indeed, I checked again and to my surprise, found that one of them had Zelda:WW and I was "cross-eliminated". I honestly never considered such a thing until now (I never paid attention to how people were eliminated). Just as Speed Yoshi was saying. It's true... I was eliminated after Zelda:WW beat Oblivion.

After Melee/Brawl, it is nice to be able to relax for a few matches, but come Sat. night I will have to worry again. It is that stupid Fallout 3/Metroid Prime match. Why oh why did I put faith in Metriod Prime. I guess I have to hope for a miracle on that match or kiss my Cactuar nomination goodbye.

The WW guy was behind in points. So if Oblivion had won twice, he wouldn't have been able to pass them. Can't eliminate anyone by yourself unless you're ahead.

And we've had a number of combo eliminations earlier in the contest, not sure if any others got knocked out despite their pick winning though.

So, like, he's ahead of WW guy by a point. The immediate WW/Oblivion win doesn't put him ahead or behind any, but it guarantees that WW can get through and Oblivion can't...at which point WW guy can go up on him the next round. Barring that, MM guy does. I take it he had GSC?

More importantly, how do you go about determining this stuff? I certainly wouldn't have picked that out sifting these things by hand. Are you sure you don't have some kind of algorithm you run, or are you just that good at noticing this stuff?

Hey Don,

Ever since Round 2, I knew that if we both survived to Round 5, we would go head to head on the FO3/MP match. However, I felt like if it came down to that, MP would not win. Crap, I wish I went with FO3.

Ngamer, do you know off hand what the stats are on that match? Just wondering if I have even the smallest chance.

I've only been looking at the head to head's recently but I did notice that MP vs FO3 was the only thing separating our brackets. It's a good thing you took it too, otherwise I'd have been out long ago due to the silly risks I took in the earlier rounds (like KOTOR over FFIX). I give MP about a 20% chance of doing it.
We're definitely looking like the two best of the FFX brackets.

On the bright side, Ng, the last pick is completely free.

However, that's just to win the guru. Somehow I doubt you'll win the actual bracket challenge with that. There's got to be *somebody* who took those two finalists. Getting the right finalist alone is worth 127 points, so as long as their other picks aren't absolutely pitiful, they should be able to top the ~250 other people will have if there's a screwball winner.

You still gotta catch FO3 > MP, and MM has to win over WW and MGS3 both. I'd consider that favorable, but that's still 3 conditions to meet. If you're assuming that those things happen, and SSBB advances to the finals over TP and FO3, then yes, you'd be head to head with BT. No offense, but I hope these don't happen because I don't want to see MM win any more...my guru chances notwithstanding.

I'd try to make a prediction, but honestly at this point I'm really not sure what the strength of a bunch of the remaining games is, exactly. FFX has been strong, but not exactly a world beater, not counting last round's SFF match-up. RE4 had a strong round 4 opponent, also. MGS has stunk up the tournament, so I dunno how 3 will fare next round against a Zelda. TP has been strong, but not as strong as SSBB. MP has kinda limped along, but continued to win, while Fallout has looked quite good. It's easy to guess at this point SSBB over FO3, but the lower half is trickier still. It pains me to say it, but MM really might come through there.

FO3 over MP is the only one in question, MM will destroy MGS3 and it has already beaten WW.
I really think FO3 will beat MP by a good margin as well. I know it's a bit cocky of me to say but I think that a me vs BT final is very likely. Naturally I concede that FFX isn't the favourite in that matchup.
I know what you mean about MM, and I'll concede fett has a shot, but I really can't see it making the finals. That said the strength of MM is really what's carrying me (that and my FFX choice). I can't believe that some of the choice I have made (KOTOR>FF9) haven't already knocked me out.

Also do we know for a fact that the next contest will be a 1v1 character battle or is that still up in the air?

Fallout 3 over MP isn't really in question at all for me. It's much more "by how much". Besides, it's a night match and MP's record with Europeans is pretty dang awful.

I mean, if Fallout 3 can slam Halo 1 at 60% and Batman Arkhasylum (who definitely got some Batman vote to help its score) at 58%, I don't see how a Metroid Prime which only beat Half-Life 2 because of a day match would do it. Especially since HL2 scored 54% on God of War and 56% on GTAIII, both games comparable in strength to Halo 1.

When two brackets both eliminate someone at the same time.
EG. if a result occurs meaning you cannot win regardless of futures results because either user 'a' eliminates you if 'x' combination of results happen or user 'b' eliminates you if 'y' combination of results happen because they have a higher score than you no matter which way the results go (x or y). Users a and b thus get half an elimination each. Users 'a' and 'b' could of course have the same remaining bracket as you and have a higher current score in which case they would also get half an elimination.

The current match is closer than I thought but brawl seems to be a lock. I wouldn't mind seeing the next round of potential eliminations. Good job by the way guys.

I want RE4 to pull this off not just for my 'hey, only the end means anything if you pick an upset!' bracket strategy, but because it truly deserves it. it should be the GotD and I'm glad i picked it in this match. I personally like MM better and Brawl a little better, and FFX is fine, but it's the right choice.

I'm starting to think FFX might win. Allen may have had inside info on the amount of votes it got during nominations. Considering that Brawl was 2 seeded, it leads me to believe he would have the idea FFX will take it.

Can't wait until the finals. My first guru and hopefully a win. Very exciting. Got the bracket top 50 for good measure. I have to say though I did take a few risks that didn't really pay off. It's good that no one with FFX winning had the semi finals of Brawl>Fallout FFX>MM.

I'd suggest that BT and Don start thinking in terms of a 1v1 All Fictional Character Battle as our next Contest for late this Summer. This would mean that your choice could either be someone traditional (like, say, Jigglypuff to complete the Original 12 roster) or someone entirely new, as long as they have appeared in at least one videogame and are not a real life person (like, say, The Joker).

I've already started thinking about it. I'll make a topic if I win outlining a few candidates, their credentials and how strong I think they could be. I guess the main point of the topic would be to get some feedback from my fellow guru's.

I suppose my problems are:
1. Any character I really want to nominate wouldn't be very strong. I'd like for my nomination to make it through at least the first round, and I suppose guru nominations would only give it a fairly low seed?
I am a big Bubsy Bobcat fan, but I can't see him getting past the first round. Toejam from Toejam and Earl was a character I had always thought about nominating as well

2. If I nominate a character who I like, but not love, on the basis that I'd think they'd be strong my options are quite limited. Such characters would likely be merely yet another character from a game that already has characters nominated. I do not really want to go this way as I'd think it'll be quite boring. No one wants to see a Wakka/Zell/Barret/Epona/Deku Tree/Raichu type nomiation, at least I don't.

3. A 'joke' nomination might work, such as say the spacecraft from Space Invaders/ Blinky from Pac-Man type nomination. I may go this way, as if it draws a weak character it should be able to pull a win right?

So yeah I will probably go with option 1 or 3, but I haven't really decided on the character yet. I don't see myself going for option 2, but a character like Snorelax I am a big fan of, and I think could have some strength- but I don't want it to be the 4th Pokemon entrant

But obviously if I win I'll have awhile to think about it, so there is no rush. sometime in January I will probably come up with something after scouting opinion. How long is tradition for Guru's to take?

Irvine would be my FFVIII character over Zell anyway. I do also like Seifer and his ROMANTIC DREAM. But yeah do not expect a zell nomination. I like Blinky as well, but I'll go through his credentials and a whole host more if I win. Hopefully FO3 can bleed brawl a lot more otherwise it's a huge 'if".

Hmmm... it would be an extremely risky choice in terms of SB actually allowing it, but assuming he did, dang. If you think about it, the hardcore atheists are sure to joke vote God because "lol FICTIONAL character, owned!". But if you present a hardcore Christian with #1. Link vs #16. God, isn't God about the only thing they would choose in that scenario?

1. Any character I really want to nominate wouldn't be very strong. I'd like for my nomination to make it through at least the first round, and I suppose guru nominations would only give it a fairly low seed?
I am a big Bubsy Bobcat fan, but I can't see him getting past the first round. Toejam from Toejam and Earl was a character I had always thought about nominating as well

2. If I nominate a character who I like, but not love, on the basis that I'd think they'd be strong my options are quite limited. Such characters would likely be merely yet another character from a game that already has characters nominated. I do not really want to go this way as I'd think it'll be quite boring. No one wants to see a Wakka/Zell/Barret/Epona/Deku Tree/Raichu type nomiation, at least I don't.

So yeah I will probably go with option 1 or 3, but I haven't really decided on the character yet. I don't see myself going for option 2, but a character like Snorelax I am a big fan of, and I think could have some strength- but I don't want it to be the 4th Pokemon entrant

But obviously if I win I'll have awhile to think about it, so there is no rush. sometime in January I will probably come up with something after scouting opinion. How long is tradition for Guru's to take?

Don't worry about being rushed- take a couple months to decide if you'd like. The only important thing is that you've made your choice public by the time nominations come up this Summer.

I only like Barrett from that second group, but at this point I'm 90% sure he's going to be a Rally Contest winner and get pushed into the bracket that way, so I wouldn't worry about him. Sounds like you weren't serious about picking any of those anyways, so good!

A joke entrant would be fine, but regarding Blinky specifically- "The Pac Man Ghosts" were an entrant in the Villains Contest at GameSpot a few months back, so that joke has kind of been stolen on you, if you're looking for something original.

Yes I did indeed go to sleep at 5.32. I worked at a bar until 2.30 (Uni holidays) and I find that I am a bit wound up form all the coffees that happen during the shift and the beers that happen afterwards that I don't get to sleep until real late. Not healthy I know.

And yeah it does kind of suck. I considered posting my uncle's address for the prize to be posted to, but Karma would be OK (more importantly though, I get a board right?)

Not sure what's going on with the scores, but I seem to have 32 points less on the site than I do with my bracket (even though the site says it's up to date for Brawl's win and my bracket's correct...). Most simple explanation would be it not giving people who picked Brawl the 32 points they should've got, is that indeed what happened?

OK I'm going to sleep confident in the fact that the stall is definitely on. I expect MM to come close to FFX in the afternoon (but not overtake) before it loses more ground in the SNV (a term I recently learned). 50.5 seems about fair to me. And the highest-ranked Majora's Mask backer is too far down the line to actually catch up now. I think I'd have been in a similar position if my Twilight Princess pick had come through because I screwed up too much of the later rounds to keep apace. My 200 would have been a 312 from TP taking SSBB's matches instead. That would land me a whopping *two* points ahead of don if the finals were TP > FFX. The MM people are in even worse shape, so basically if FFX doesn't win the next two matches, BT wins.

God would be fantastic, just to see if SB would allow it. I'll spare opinions on contest strength and conflicting view-points on whether people would support him in a poll or not, but if SB is going to open up the contest to other fictional characters (which has a poor shot already, despite what Ngamer says), religious figures will undoubtedly become a territory of ugly debate. God would be far and away the most controversial of them AS WELL AS have some of the highest potential. If the contest is ever opened up this wide, let's not act like God wouldn't get a big rally attempt into a contest anyway. If BT wants to back God into a contest, that'd be the most exciting Guru-pick we've ever had...and this is assuming the contest opens up like that.

I hope I stop caring about the contests before that happens though. This is intended to be a celebration of video games, and we saw in GameSpot's All-Time Greatest Villain contest with Vader and the Joker that people were celebrating them for different reasons than their gaming history. Did anybody enjoy seeing Vader in the Finals there, or feel good about the Joker reaching the Final Four? I know they're in some games, but this is nearly as trashy of an idea as games VS characters. As your fellow stats-man, gang, I fear you're too hungry for new upsets and have missed the point of these things.

I'm somewhat curious on how much Batman could get on Link in a poll, sure, but forget a contest based around that idea. Everybody here knows why Batman's popular, and you knew why long before Batman: Arkham Asylum was released. This is apples to oranges in a new unnecessary extreme.

I also apologize if this offends, but it feels like BT's being used as a pawn to push this fictional idea through. It's one thing to have a back-up game for when we surprisingly don't have a character contest, but "excellent chances of happening" doesn't fit with this fictional idea at all. Never happened here yet despite you guys wanting it for years, GameSpot's attempt was a disaster, and didn't SB speak strongly against it one time too?

There's ot even an easy way to describe the contest. All fictional characters? Well, no, just the ones that have been in video games. Does this include religious characters? It seems like even you guys are shying away from answering that one, and it's your idea in the first place.

Doubt it. I dropped from 2nd to 7th last night, and there's enough people on the leaderboard with MM that I'll probably end up in the 20's if Brawl loses. Kind of sucks to come so close and lose because of Zelda. I'd be bitter, but Majora is legitimately an amazing game.

There are already 8 people on the leaderboard that have Majora's Mask as their winner and even assuming that not all of them have prize entries, there's bound to be more to come that have MM as their winner.

BT would be lucky enough just to stay on the leaderboard if MM manages to win.

Was very close to choosing the upset of MM in the semi between MM/FFX and probably would have had MM take the lot if I had it make the final, was just worried I already had it going too far based on other people's entries. Should have taken the risk, was unlikely to win with my bracket anyway - not unique enough. SSBB vs SSBM killed my bracket though anyway.

Anyways, I finished in the Top half, and ahead of Bacon, so I'm feeling alright about my contest. I was dead in the water halfway through R1, so I'm glad I'll at least have these two things to look back at.
