The Top 200 Nominations So Far (GameFAQs-wide)

As you've noticed by now, SB has created a very cool reworked form for this season that will even suggest characters to you if you misspell their names or assign them to the wrong game. After extensive testing, we've been able to determine that in order to become a suggested character, you have to get into the Top 200 most-nominated characters in the database as of when the Submit button is hit. Through some creative searching we've been able to uncover almost all of those current top 200. So here we go!

Much thanks to KP, Zen, Yesmar, and Rock for helping uncover this system and dig up all the names in the listing.

Remember that it's still very early on in the nomination process, which would explain why the 200 is currently so filled with joke entrants and Board 8 favorites. Also, if you have a rally going for a character but don't see them in the 200, don't lose heart- there's still plenty of time to gain support and make it into the listing.

Also, we've only been able to find 185 of the 200 so far. Hopefully having this list all in one place will help us to uncover the remaining 15.

Almost all of them. Obviously Samus is in there, but certain characters just don't pop up with this method of searching.

Whoops! Okay, that takes us to 188.

I think the best bet would be to do more searching on the most popular starting letters. There must have been a few cases where looking at "Sa" had so many choices that Samus didn't get to be listed, and suchlike.

Yeah. I just tried the method of testing we used, and Samus and Sephiroth don't show up from it. Just how it goes!

If it is truly the case where the Top 200 are list, this could end up fluctuating a bit as characters that are borderline end up on and off the list. Not that it really matters, as those characters don't have a snowball's chance in hell of making the final bracket.

And no, you need to continue doing your B8 Nom tally! All this info we're finding in this topic is who makes the Top 256- useful, but it's also important to know who gets the most nominations, who gets the 10th most, etc. That's data we're only going to be able to guess based on your topic.

Input values are the amount of total nominations at the time of the submission. NOT the amount of nominations for that character.

I'm going to mark borderline characters (those we know were not on the list as of when we started to check) with a *.

Now the question is... are we really getting a Top 200, and anything more that comes up will be borderline characters that have only just snuck into the list? OR, is it 256 and we're still missing a bunch of solid mid-listers?

Input values are the amount of total nominations at the time of the submission. NOT the amount of nominations for that character.

No, I mean the values for the inputs that come up when you search, not the previous noms you have made.

It might not even be 200 or 256. it could be some wonky number like 216 for all we know.

Stingers, that just means that the person who nomed Link at that time was casting the 83rd nomination. All the "input" number tells you is the number of total noms that had been sent in as of your nomination.

Like Link was the 83rd character to get enough nominations, and input value 1 was the very first character to get that many nominations.

Unless the very first nomination for Link was nomination 83, but then Vyse would be on the list too because someone said they nommed Vyse 42nd.

There are 2 separate input values - ones for your nominations (that show when YOU nominated that character), and the input value you see that comes up when you search for a character (for example, search for "sa" and look at the source. Balthier is #15, Isaac is 54, Ivy is 55, etc.)

It seems most likely that each character has a number from 1 to whatever, and the number represents the order in which they were added to the suggestion list.

Perhaps it started with a certain amount of them (characters from old contests maybe?) and then added more as they got nominated.

Because I can say for a fact that Typhlosion was not on the recommended list when I nominated him, but soon after I made a topic on LUE telling people to do it, they started seeing him on the list.

A.k.a, he was definitely added after Zidane. (And 19 other people, apparently)

My guess is that SBAlenn had a "list" of 181 characters which this search function would recognize before any nominations came in, and it started adding popular characters that weren't off the list at a later date.

Which would mean that only characters with a value of 182+ are ones that we can be sure are receiving a significant number of nominations.

<181 = List of SBAllen's, the 181 characters I guess he assumed would be the most searched for, put them in there to help.

Okay, I see what happened here. SB took all 128 characters from last year's Contest, which he already had in his database, and then said "hm, who else is likely to be nommed this year? why don't I check the Top Ten FAQs and Top Ten message boards for the current consoles and handhelds and add their main characters?" I can buy Cloud only being the 3rd character to hit the needed mark, only because half of those early noms probably called him "Cloud" and the other half "Cloud Strife". Still, it's going to be quite an honor when we find 182 and 183- they beat out Cloud in a Contest setting!

Alright, I figured it out... moreso.

1-181 are characters from the 2007 and 2006 Contests + some newcomers randomly selected by SB. 183 is Aya Brea and 184 is Cloud and 186 is Rydia- those, in that order, makes no sense in the context of an early nom rush. So clearly there were just a few late additions or people who fell off the database that SB threw in at the last minute.

Which means the first two characters to legitimately reach the needed vote total and make the list are

GlaDOS
Altair

...aka the first two major rallies that took off on this board, pretty much as soon as the bracket came up. Next up we don't know, but right after that Mewtwo made it in, and we know from last year what a nom favorite he is, so that makes sense as well.

It's all coming together now!

Hm... well Rydia does have 6 nominations so far in stingers' B8 tally topic, so I guess it's possible she hit the needed vote mark before GlaDOS. If that's the case then the last hand-entered character could have been Aya Brea, and then it went Cloud, someone, Rydia, GlaDOS, Altair.

Alright, new hypothesis:

SB accidentally clicked something to knock two of the hand-entered characters out of order- Axel and Aya. He also hit something at some point to knock out Cloud. Then he opened noms, and the first to hit the magic nom barrier were

Cloud
Weighted Companion Cube
Rydia
GlaDOS
Altair
Travis Touchdown
Lucario
Someone
Diddy Kong

This makes pretty good sense IMO. Cloud winning was just a given, the Cube and GlaDOS have harcore fanbases that would have showed up early, Rydia had a pretty successful pre-Rally, and Altair/Travis/Lucario took off pretty quick once the ball got rolling, we've seen enough evidence of that here on the board.

The question becomes, what does it take to make it on to the list? 20 noms? 25? I think it's something in that range, as there are a couple on stingers list at 10 or so that still haven't cracked the mark.

If anything, we learned that people who are utter givens like Cloud still command a ton of nomination support, even though people who tend to make it to the ballot first would probably save their noms for characters who aren't such locks.

Actually, come to think about it, Axel, Aya, and Cloud are 182, 183, and 184, and are alphabetized correctly. Chances are SB accidentally knocked out all three, and the list should really start at 185.

If you do, then I guess it's possible that that's how it played out. But since Axel and Aya would have been listed on the bottom of the A section when listed alphabetically, it seems more likely that there was just a mis-click that put them out of place before things went final.

I agree with the "They're in alphabetical order" theory, however Axel -> Aya -> Cloud seems possible to me since:
A) A lot of people don't waste nominations on sure bets like Cloud.
B) Board 8 usually gets the first nominations in, and we're not exactly known for being Cloud fans.

Yeah, pretty impossible to say whether Ada was the last one in and Cloud won the race or Cloud was the last grandfathered in with Cube taking the crown.

I don't disagree with B8 not liking Cloud or Cloud not needing support, and as I brought up before, Cloud's base would have been split between people saying Cloud and others saying Cloud Strife. So if GlaDOS or Cube or Altair had finished ahead of him, I'd be willing to buy that as legit. But Aya Brea?

Pretty sure that everyone who gets on the list stays on it (contrary to what i said earlier), as people like Drebon, The Dog, Missingno, Sparkster ect. are still on it. So no real way to tell how Olimar is doing, especially since he was one of the originals put on it by SBAllen.

You're not really throwing away a nomination though guys. I mean, once the # of required nominations has been determined, you just change the nomination back, right?

I'm not sure if "A from A" is a really good idea though. I mean, what are you going to type to check the spelling thing? Suppose for a sec A was a wildly popular character from game A, and SBAllen gave him a spell check in the beginning. I'm not sure something like "Ab" or whatever would cause the spell checker to correct you.

I prefer Ninja from N myself.

I saved a copy of the nominations page and modifed the page so it submits info to GameFAQSs. At that point I could just change the number to whatever I wanted and it would add it to my nominations.

Um, wouldn't this be a logical explanation?(I don't think I have read it in this topic.)

Sailor(or his monkeys) are monitoring the nomination system. basicly he has to go through to every different string that is entered. So for example

Sonic (Sonic)
Sonic (Sonic series)
Sonic the hedgehog(Sonic)
Sonic the hedgehog(Sonic series)
Sonic the hedgedog(Sonic)

etc.

Now if with a certain character he sees that many different strings are entered, he adds it to the list so that he won't have to work on it anymore.
The characters that are entered with perfect strings or there are only a few mistakes, it's not worth adding it to the database because the users are using the correct names. And adding it would take more of his time.

Just to give a theory why certain characters with a lot of nominations won't turn up if we nominated them, because we know the correct names of our nominations.

Still no 220? Hm... well let's see how many new noms have been cast. Up to... 86,321. So well over 30k noms since last night, yet still no one has made it past the magic nom number.

Well shoot, either SB is entering things in manually when they get enough, or he's raised the bar for what it takes to earn a spot on The List.

Assuming it's not being done manually, maybe you only get a spot on the list once you have a certain percentage of overall nominations? Or maybe only the top 128 or so get a spot on the list and if you fall below 128 you still stay on the list?

Alright, seems more and more like everyone in the 219 was pushed in manually by SB. We originally didn't think this was the case because it's not like all the new rallied characters appears on the list within 5 minutes- we have plenty of evidence that people like Layton and Sho didn't show up until over 8 hours after the form originally went online. But apparently SB was looking into the early noms on and off all last night. In fact, he made the latest changes and additions to the List after 3am EST according to the results we were getting, so either he's really dedicated to the Contest this year or he was having trouble getting to sleep last night.

I guess there's some pros and cons if this is the case. On the down side, we don't get to say there's a hard and fast nomination point that character should be trying for, like 25 noms or 30 noms or something. And it's also possible that we're not going to see any new additions to the List until Monday, assuming SB doesn't check back in over the weekend here.

On the plus side, this means that anything on the List officially has SB's stamp of approval, since it would have had to come through him in order to get online. So if they can manage enough noms, we're definitely going to see The Dog or The Heavy or Missingno or even Mega Man X in this bracket. Of course post-L Block we'd already assumed SB was going to be more lax than CJay when it came to keeping out joke or borderline acceptable characters, but this certainly confirms the suspicions.

Anything pointing to 1v1s? Hard to say, there isn't all that much to go on from what I'm seeing. Really the only info we have is that SB is putting a huge number of characters up for consideration- would it really be worth his time to create entry slots for the Heavy, Spy, AND Pyro from TF2 if there were only going to be 64 characters in the running this season? So it kind of seems as though we're looking at another larger bracket.

Entirely speculation though.

I'm worried that we're going to end up with a team contest. We're being given 15 nominations like last year's 128 character battle, but I wouldn't expect four way matches again and 1v1 would take forever with that many characters (unless we do two matches a day which I would be totally ok with)... so yeah... I'm concerned.

Typhlosion's reason is...that he's a starter?

Garchomp's reason is...he's a powerful Pokemon in competitive battle with a fad behind him?

If anything Garchomp has the better reason because of the fad (why helo thar Bidoof), but both of them are random.

Mewtwo and Charizard, on the other hand, are two of the most popular Pokemon and deserve a shot (in Mewtwo's case, another shot, since he did so well in a terrible placement with Ryu and Bowser).

You should've stayed a bit longer though. Fretzy made a Brawl Murder Mystery Mansion RP-Type game. It was awesome.

I have been doing some behind the scenes work lately regarding this.

I studied the source code of the form used to finalize your nomination if you somehow spelled a character's name wrong or make a mistake in the first game appearance. I then took the source code and modified it a bit so I can add any character to my nomination list just by the option value alone. The modified source code was saved as an HTML file so I can use it for my own purposes.
