Goodness, only to the 26th matchup of the Contest, and already we've burned through 500 posts of discussion. Let's keep up the strong pace! (Shouldn't be hard, especially since we're getting close to elimination territory!

Thanks to my main man MJ, the Guru site for this season is up and running with everyone's bracket in the system!

First I'd like to note that we smashed the previous record for attendance; there were 183 Gurus in 2007, this time we had well over 200 submit a bracket, whoo hooo!

Alright, let's talk a little about the features you see here.

Risks are now accurate as in, that's how many times you have a different character in that position as compared to this year's Guru Cookie.

Status, as in whether your bracket is Alive or Dead, as in "is it still possible for me to win the Guru Contest if everything goes perfectly for me?" will once again be handled this year by our friend LtK. It's certainly going to be much harder to accurately calculate than in past years, so hopefully Mr. Kettch is up to the challenge. Because if not, I'm sure as heck not going to touch it!

Today's Pick is everyone's choice for the poll that is currently taking place. Anytime someone picked against the Cookie for this match their choice will show in red.

You'll also notice that we've got a returning favorite from last season... personal bracket pages! Just click your name anywhere on the site and you'll be taken to a listing of your bracket, complete with your score, DoA status, total risks, and a dangerous red marking on all your picks that are risky. For example, here's the bracket for this year's riskiest picker, Han, who guessed against the Cookie a full 54 times.

But my favorite thing about the site is how we now have a complete listing of the Guru prediction stats, ie how many of us picked which characters in all 63 matches. With so many debatable matches, I think this is something people are really going to want to take a look at as the Contest progresses. You can scan the results yourself at

But that's not all! Say you glance through and notice that nine crazy people have Liquid Snake advancing out of round one ahead of Luigi. Who would do such a thing, you wonder. Well now you can find out in a moment, by clicking Who Picked Who in the results table! That will take you to one of the 63 Complete Matchup Predictions pages, in this case

Why, it was FD, Fett, raytan, Viviff, Doma, LinkLegend, VicPez, arkenaga, and XIII, the knuckleheads! And as with the main page, to see more of their wacky picks you could click their names and be taken to their full brackets.

(BTW, if you're interested in previous results, the rankings and brackets from CB5, BSE, and CB6 are both linked from the top of every page.)

One new addition for this season are the clickable column headers on the main page. You can resort the rankings by name, score (the default), fixed score, today's pick, tiebreaker, or number of total upsets selected by clicking those headers on the top of the page.

Oh, and there's also been two new additions to the personal bracket pages. If you click the ">" for any match you'll be taken to the full Guru breakdown for that poll, in terms of who picked whom. Also, the thengamer supercomputer is now running a complex and highly scientific analysis on every Guru's bracket, and has been set to display its thoughts on the bracket's overall quality at the bottom of the page. That's pretty cool, IMO.

The next elimination will occur if Sandbag does not advance. That will eliminate PeaceOut, but he doesn't really have a chance anyways.

I wouldn't be eliminated by hochi even without Sandbag and Auron coming through for me? That's good to know. Though it would depend on Scorpion and Zero advancing, both of which seem unlikely now.

Just to remind the people running this that it's insanely easy to HTML edit your bracket and screenshot the changed one. I'm sure genuine mistakes occur now and again with brackets being copied over but if people are claiming the change a day before the match in question you have to raise serious doubts over their integrity.

No it's not. You're using your official bracket to prove that you made different picks than what has been recorded in the guru, when clearly the two brackets aren't identical.

You have no idea how badly I want this. Ever since we started the Guru nomination wager, my dream has been to get the entirety of Board 8 to nominate Waluigi and become more hated than the jp in one fell swoop!

Yeah, as the person in charge or entering and editing guru brackets, and with that bracket being different than what you have in the guru (oh hey, it's five points less!), your Dante > Hogger pick is going to stay the same, Albion Hero. If you want to further discuss this issue on AIM with me, you can go on ahead, but if I don't answer you in the next few minutes, it's because I'm putting towels in the washer because doing laundry is fun!

At best you're trying to combine the most beneficial results for you from two brackets and I'm not sure how you can claim that isn't cheating. It's not my contest but I'd DQ the guy without hesitating.

As I told Lou, I had Hogger on my bracket because I was hyping Hogger for a while but didn't wanna look like a fool for having him losing after hyping him, but was planning on telling them to change it kinda close to the match that my other bracket actually had ramza since Hogger didn't really stand a chance. I only hyped him cuz I love to hype WoW related things and for people to think he had a chance, and that would have all been nullified if it showed I didn't even have him advance. I guess thats cheating, and I'm willing to be DQ for it.

I wouldn't DQ him (not like he has a chance, anyway). However, I do think we should include a future rule that requires your Guru bracket to be identical to your bracket entered in the contest. You should also include the account name in which the bracket was posted under so we could track it and confirm legitimacy.

I'm not pointing fingers at Albion or Smurf (especially since Smurf hasn't made any changes and because I think making future rules retroactive is ridiculous), but I think it's something Ngamer should consider for the next contest.

The only bracket I entered was a rushed one submitted 5 minutes after it opened. Being from outside the US I'm not eligible for a prize so there's no real incentive for me to enter a bracket there so the Guru is the one I put effort into. I think rather than have link up just get everyone to verify their bracket once the site goes live to make sure any errors are corrected before it starts.

Would someone like to take over Leaderboard Watch and make it a nightly feature for soon after the Contest Stats update? Here are some fun things we could track:

- total number of Gurus on the Leaderboard
- comparison to our yearly/all-time records for most Gurus listed at once (or else how close this comes to our all-time low, if alot get knocked off after an upset)
- what Gurus missed the match and fell off the board
- what new Gurus are entering the board for the first time

I think it would be a good feature to keep updated daily, or at least every time there's a change in terms of someone falling off/joining, as its the best way to make sure our top brackets were entered properly and there's no funny business happening.

So, first to sign up for the LB Watch updater position get the job!

How weak did you think Riku is? Pikachu beat both Leon and Dante and here we're only expecting Riku to beat just Leon. Now I wouldn't be surprised if Dante > Leon was the result next round.

After a quick check, of the 213 gurus,

22 will be getting 4 points and 18 will be getting 2 points assuming the result remains Duke > Altair. Should Altair pull off the implausible, reverse the numbers. No-one had both going through.

Which means that a staggering 81.22% of the gurus are getting no points from today's match.

Least I should get SOME points for this match, but very unlikely to get more than half.

Lucky I had Luigi in second, rather than Bowser as I originally had it (Was Luigi>Bowser, changed after a few days of the bracket being open). should get me an extra couple of points.

Didn't expect Liquid to do quite so well, but makes sense now I think about it.

Gotta be some more eliminations coming up though with the amount losing points these last two days.

Yes, that is correct, only 4 Gurus would be getting full points if MMX were able to hold on today. Which means the Full Point Totals for the last three matches would be... 0, 9, and 4. Out of the 213 of us. Good golly!

How exactly do eliminations work?

If it's impossible for someone to win they're eliminated. For the person who was eliminated even if all of the rest of the matches went his way there was someone with a higher score than him, so it's impossible for him to win. Thus he's knocked out.

It's been fun and all, but my schedule is getting even more hectic with each day, so I don't have that much time to do recreation, and I would prefer spending it doing things I want instead of spending 15 minutes on the leaderboard.

Well, I looked in my archived guru bracket entering topic and you have Sonic > Magus, and it's been like a week since that match, so yeah, cough up a few pics of your bracket. I want to see every part of your entered bracket, as well as seeing your entire computer desktop in each picture, please.

Here's an example of how your first pick should look:

Start from the top of your bracket like that, and take a few more pics with the print screen key so we can get all of your bracket shown. Then I'll look it over and make the Sonic > Sandbag change, should everything be kosher.

And I think ffmasterjose eliminated it as of Liquid Snake > Luigi, but that's almost complete guesswork. I think it's right though, simply because everyone else has enough upsets to allow the cookie through.

I think many people did/do. Mario didn't do too badly against Vincent last year. If Samus gets clobbered and Vincent suffers a bit from being up against much stronger competition, I see it as pretty reasonable, although still risky. I had Link > Vincent in my bracket (pretty confidently) until I decided to side with the jokes.

I like Vincent in Link/Mario/Samus/Vincent (though L-Block will be there instead...grrr). If you get rid of Sephiroth from last year's Link/Vincent/Sephiroth/Mario match, Vincent will do a lot better...and if you then add samus, Mario should naturally look worse for it. I think that would be enough to do the trick for Vincent if he's strong enough to beat Crono.

Whoa, did we ever luck out! A bad miss by Zylo (whose bracket makes less sense every day) costs us one LB position, but we're pulled out of the fire by Ng and Xuxon getting perfect ranking placement to JUST squeeze them onto the board. That raises our total to 10 Gurus being represented on the big board. Pretty awesome, except that only 1 of the 10 of us correctly called this Gordon upset, so there could be mass slaughter on the Top 50 tomorrow night!

He probably is. His bracket is mostly cookie from hereon out and the places it's not are things that are impossible to happen. (Niko, Zelda are already eliminated). He might have a way to beat bospsychopaat, but I highly doubt it's possible for him to win. I'd trust the script here.

Pretty sure he is, since he's guaranteed to lose 16 points to Link > Niko and Mario > Zelda and can only make up points on Pikachu > Arthas (4) and Cloud > Mewtwo (8), which would only give him 12 points and he's currently down by 15.

As I'm aware, the site doesn't actively do eliminations. Rather a few select people have the script on their computer and run it after each match and check for eliminations and then relay them to NGamer who updates the site manually.

Interesting note: the only person in the world with a better bracket than Smurf? His sister, the skirtless wonder, who is now on the top of the LB with 151 pts!

Well L-Block advancing was bad for us, but since he only took 2nd a bunch of brackets were bailed out with half points and so the damage wasn't as catastrophic as it could have been. Just expan, Pat, and MJ fall off the board with this result, while former Top 60s Ngamer and Xuxon take another step back. On the plus side we've now got... 18 Gurus within 2 points of making the leaderboard, so we should be coming back from this low water mark of 8 in no time!

Ness is correct, I just update the site after Rock confirms an elimination- no way is the site set up to run a complicated elimination formula like that!

For the first time in a long long while, neither Smurf nor yo are heading up the Gurus- the Pika > Alucard result was enough to launch Mega into first place. As both he and Smurf took WCC for today, they're going to remain 1-2 for a little bit here at least.

Another 6 bodies have been added to the death list; we're now down to 195 players who still have a chance at the championship (well actually less, once the current result goes final).

Well, a bit of a sad result in that we lost three Gurus, but all in all it was a positive result, as we now have 11 entered brackets within the top 60 and a good dozen more just barely off the pace but ready to step up soon. For the moment we maintain our number with 8 listed on the LB, but expect that to rise to a new record total fairly soon here. Just... not tomorrow night yet. Darn you Cube!

In other news, not only is Smurf's sister still atop the ranks, she has opened up a monstrous 4 point lead on the nearest competitor. Talk about impressive!

It all depends on what you have at the finals rounds of the contest. If your final rounds are relatively cookie, it will probably happen soon enough. If you have L-Block > Cloud as your final, you'll probably last a while.

Had a quick look at my upsets in later rounds, and it seems nobody else had Snake over Cloud in the quarters along with Mario taking second in his semi. Could be looking good for me if both those happen, even if it is kind of unlikely. Guess it is why I'm still alive though.

Should have kept WCC going through this round, had it originally. It is only Tidus, should have realised. Oh well.

Eh, for being a match that only 14 Gurus correctly predicted, this was actually a pretty decent result for us in leaderboard terms. Mega and Smurf shoot into commanding positions for choosing the Cube while yo and KM rocket from just off the LB all the way into Top 20 spots for likewise backing it. True, we lose Pie and Pat to stay at 8 total on the board, but both guys are still Top 60 and should be hoping right back in once this Zero placement goes final. Still on pace to set a new record for Guru representation pretty soon here!

Okay, little pre-poll match-up here...

Cloud vs Pac-Man vs Mewtwo vs Midna

Cloud gets first, no questions...

I know that Mewtwo is the group favorite for second and that only 9 (myself included) have Midna beating Mewtwo. But, I was counting on Ness to SFF Mewtwo enough from Melee to let Midna inch (like <3% kinda inch) past Mewtwo. With Ness gone, my hopes of Midna advancing left with him...

Here's the question: Is Pac-Man enough of a threat to Mewtwo to reinstate my hopes of Midna advancing, or should I continue expecting her to lose?

I have Snake>Zero today not Snake>Ryu. I had Ryu>Zero in round 1 which might be the reason for this error. Zero will probably go and lose to Vivi now and it will make no difference.

I sort of hope Pac-Man gets second tomorrow, even though I have Mewtwo. Would make my Cloud>Squall pick in Rd 3 look a lot safer. A lot of people picked Yoshi for second there I see - Ouch.

This was a bit of an odd result in that even though it was the vast Guru consensus we still lost two leaderboard positions once it went final... but oh well, everyone else moved up a good bit, including Pie and Pat who had been just barely off the LB, so in the end we gain one position and now have 9 brackets represented. This Sora result is going to throw us for a bit of a loop (only 2 Gurus in the top 30 predicted it to happen), but we should still be able to weather the storm alright, especially if the Cloud > Mewtwo pick comes through for us.

I say that because the casuals were HORRIBLE in terms of realizing that Mewtwo has some legit strength. Did you realize that Mewtwo was the underdog in his first round match, in the minds of the GameFAQs casuals? Over 41% of brackets had Pac-Man finishing first in that match, versus less than 27% for Mewtwo. In terms of overall advancement, 75% picked Pac to reach the second round against only 60% for Mew.

Hmm... well overall this was a negative result, lowering us from 9 to just 8 on the leaderboard. However, considering what a major shock that Sora advancement was in terms of our brackets, things could have been much worse. We got bailed out by the casuals actually having too MUCH faith in Sora; they were so messed up that they thought he was the favorite in this matchup, not Squall! Anyways, tonight should be a major victory for us- assuming of course that Mewtwo doesn't collapse with the second night vote and let Midna sneak out the win. As long as that doesn't happen we're going to have all but two Gurus in the Top 43 getting full credit for a match where I think the casuals are going to be seriously owned... should be a major windfall for the Gurus!

Well, plenty of upward movement today with all of our LB Gurus getting the match correctly, but even though nearly everyone took a nice step upwards (as I predicted the casuals were awful; only 22% of them had Mewtwo advancing), we got unlucky in that no one else was quite able to make the Top 50, leaving us at 8 for right now. Actually we got incredibly unlucky- PokemonPat's extremely late bracket edit leaves him a mere 1 spot away from cracking onto the LB and helping us out. Dang!

Crazy result happening right now with Kirby leading the pack but possibly will be very unsteady at doing so once this Power Hour wears off while MC and Raiden have been trading the lead back and forth. If the Chief is able to come back for the win while Kirby doesn't collapse overnight and let BB into the game, we should see a nice surge of Gurus onto the LB. But... all bets are off at the moment!

I can't.

I figured out that if Kirby>Chief doesn't happen, then I fall a good, uhhh...Fifteen+ guru ranking spots. OUCH!

Which, knowing the casuals' fantasies of MC>Sonic and MC>Sephiroth, may translate into a huge crash for me.

So, I'll do what I can to rally cute lil Kirby's good name before MC's power vote in the afternoon. Fortunately, it being Halloween may diminish his power vote.

Uh, not that I don't believe you or anything, but since the match is in about six hours, can you give me a few more screenshots of your bracket? And is Sandbag was a legit entry this would be a non-contest. But look no further than the gap between Cube and Tidus in Round 1 and Round 2. The joke characters bleed very little votes to other characters regardless of strength and this is a tough 4-pack.

He's got a shot but in all liklihood it's more probably that this match will be a replica of Mario's match this round. Sandbag starting strong but dropping off and it eventually becoming two seperate matches of Sub/Sandbag at ~20% and Sonic/Auron at ~30%

No, I mainly wanted to see the bottom start menu icon and task bar and the like. Also, I DID update it already. Go check. It's just that your points won't change until Ngamer puts in a new match result, and he hasn't put in Dante > Leon yet, last time I checked.

Disaster! At the Leaderboard. Weird that we could be so ruined by Dante > Leon, considering how it was the Guru consensus... Trouble was, all the "dumb" casuals thought it was a way easier pick due to "well they've obviously both stronger than Riku!" whereas most of the "smart" Gurus said "wait a minute, Pikachu beat both these guys the last time this happened! surely Riku can edge out at least one of them". Darn you 2007! This drops us back down to only 7 Gurus in the Top 50, but the bad news is that it's going to get worse before it gets better. No one our top 34 correctly guessed this Auron win, and worse yet 3 of them took Sandbag and 1 took Subby, so we might be taking a pretty major hit tonight.

Also Mac, there appears to be a problem with your pick from yesterday! We have you as taking Dante > Leon and getting 8 pts to move to 185, but your official bracket fell off the leaderboard last night, leading me to suspect that you actually had Dante > Riku. Could you clear this up for us?

Ahh, that's my bad. I looked at the archived guru topic and he had Dante > Riku in round 2. He was also missing the two matches after that for Round 2, and I had to guess on those as well. My guess is that I thought I clicked on Riku to change the default Leon to Riku, but must've been just off the radio button and didn't notice it didn't change. I'll change that right away.

Smash boom roar! Those are the sounds of our Guru brackets crashing and burning. yo was a very silly person and picked Sandbag today, costing us another spot on the LB and dropping us to a season low (or at least, since we started tracking) of 7. Worse yet all the other contenders who had been so close to getting on (Justin, espio, Mac... well I guess not Mac, since his bracket change) are now pushed further back. On the plus side, this was a huge surprise to the casuals as well; only 10% had Auron in first, and only 15% correctly placed Sonic in 2nd, so hardly anyone got the full points here. Ah well, at least the damage is over... all but 3 Gurus in our top 34 picked Kratos for second place in this one, so we should be back in winning form in about 22 hours.

Cuz with the Crono/Vincent match, Crono woulda had his revenge, and a Link/Mario/Samus split woulda easily let Crono get through
