Thanks to my main man MJ, the Guru site for this season is already all up and running with everyone's bracket in the system!

First I'd like to note that we smashed the previous record for attendance; there were 183 Gurus in 2007, this time we had well over 200 submit a bracket, whoo hooo!

...yet despite having over 200 entries, we're only two matches into the Contest and already there's only 6 perfect brackets remaining, ha! And 23 hours from now that number will be down to, at most, 3. What a wild start to this season!

Alright, let's talk a little about the features you see here.

Risks are now accurate as in, that's how many times you have a different character in that position as compared to this year's Guru Cookie.

Status, as in whether your bracket is Alive or Dead, as in "is it still possible for me to win the Guru Contest if everything goes perfectly for me?" will once again be handled this year by our friend LtK. It's certainly going to be much harder to accurately calculate than in past years, so hopefully Mr. Kettch is up to the challenge. Because if not, I'm sure as heck not going to touch it!

Today's Pick is everyone's choice for the poll that is currently taking place. Anytime someone picked against the Cookie for this match their choice will show in red. This was a great match to officially debut the rankings for, because boy, is that ever alot of red today!

You'll also notice that we've got a returning favorite from last season... personal bracket pages! Just click your name anywhere on the site and you'll be taken to a listing of your bracket, complete with your score, DoA status, total risks, and a dangerous red marking on all your picks that are risky. For example, here's the bracket for this year's riskiest picker, Han, who guessed against the Cookie a full 54 times.

But my favorite thing about the site is how we now have a complete listing of the Guru prediction stats, ie how many of us picked which characters in all 63 matches. With so many debatable matches, I think this is something people are really going to want to take a look at as the Contest progresses. You can scan the results yourself at

But that's not all! Say you glance through and notice that nine crazy people have Liquid Snake advancing out of round one ahead of Luigi. Who would do such a thing, you wonder. Well now you can find out in a moment, by clicking Who Picked Who in the results table! That will take you to one of the 63 Complete Matchup Predictions pages, in this case

Why, it was FD, Fett, raytan, Viviff, Doma, LinkLegend, VicPez, arkenaga, and XIII, the knuckleheads! And as with the main page, to see more of their wacky picks you could click their names and be taken to their full brackets.

(BTW, if you're interested in previous results, the rankings and brackets from CB5, BSE, and CB6 are both linked from the top of every page.)

One new addition for this season are the clickable column headers on the main page. You can resort the rankings by name, score (the default), fixed score, today's pick, tiebreaker, or number of total upsets selected by clicking those headers on the top of the page.

Oh, and there's also been two new additions to the personal bracket pages. If you click the ">" for any match you'll be taken to the full Guru breakdown for that poll, in terms of who picked whom. Also, the thengamer supercomputer is now running a complex and highly scientific analysis on every Guru's bracket, and has been set to display its thoughts on the bracket's overall quality at the bottom of the page. That's pretty cool, IMO.

So take a little time to look everything over, but the most important thing to do at this point is to carefully look through your own bracket as it's listed out here! If you find any mistakes versus what's listed on your official GameFAQs bracket, be sure to post them here. MJ will take care of them for you once he has a minute.

Oh, and everyone wants to hear more about fixed scoring and how that's calculated. I'll get to that in a little bit here.

I need for this match to work for me. Not only do I have Kefka going through to the division finals, my bracket have the oddity of having both my second place finishers in the first round beat both first place finishers in the second. The logic behind that is that both Marth and Lucario will suffer when faced with each other while Altair and Kefka has pretty much no crossover to worry about.

And even worse, I've got Altair clinching the second spot in the finals aswell due to FF SFF between Kefka and Zack and thus I NEED Kefka to survive this or otherwise Zack with just make it through with ease... *sigh* Stupid complicated match and stupid pink phallic Kefka.

I doubled check my bracket on your site and there are some things wrong, but it could've been me who posted it wrong.

I don't have Yoshi > Squall in round 2, I got Squall > Yoshi

In round 3 I got Masterchief > Dante, not Masterchief > Kirby

And if this result stays then I will be in the top 10 tomorrow, sweet!

Uh-oh. I noticed myself lower in the rankings than I should be, and it seems either I or the one who put in the bracket made a slight mistake. I had Zack > Wario for round 1. Doesn't need to be fixed, but just wanted to let you know.

Ngamer, for Kuge's edit, there is no Bowser option in the second place spot of the division finals. You'll need to manually change that.

Three results, three times the Gurus have ended up with egg on their faces! Let's look at them one by one.

Wario/Zack/Cecil/Fodder Dude

Zack - 82 (38.68%)
Cecil - 1 (0.47%)

Wario - 79 (37.26%)
Cecil - 18 (8.49%)

Even though most of the Gurus were in the same boat for this one, we didn't back our Wario > Zack consensus with a whole ton of confidence. There were still plenty picking the reverse to happen, and the only thing we seemed sure of what that Cecil wasn't going to contend for a spot in the top two. In the end 78 Gurus called this match correctly. That's only 37% of us, and yet it's still the best we've managed through three matches!

So, at the moment, I DO happen to see a mistake in my bracket. In Round 2, I have Sonic > Sub-Zero, NOT Sonic > Auron. I would like that changed, so that my BOLD* upset pick shows up on the guru site.

There was a time when, if 91% of the Gurus said something was going to happen, you could pretty much make it a lock. Well, not anymore! Link being in the picture is bound to mess up whatever else is happening, but I never thought he'd be able to kill Shadow so badly that Zidane would be able to make a serious run at him. Unless of course Sonic Team has legitimately fallen that far since last year... but that couldn't be. Right? RIGHT?

In any case, a hearty congrats to the mere 20 Gurus who called this match correctly!

My bracket has Riku > Leon in the first round, but I really have Leon > Riku. If you change it, I'd be happy. Second round Riku > Dante is correct, at least in that it's what I want. (As far as that happening, not so sure.)

You're eliminated when you fall behind to the point that even if you were to pick every other match correctly, someone else's bracket would still end up beating yours (mostly from having a very similar bracket for the rest of the way).

From what I understand, the fixed points system rewards people who got the correct people advancing, so in the first round someone who merely swapped Wario and Zack around got more points than someone who put Cecil instead of Wario, despite both of those picks getting 2 points normally.

With Duke's stunning second place finish in the books, 211 of us have been eliminated from Perfect contention, leaving only Lockes Ragnarok standing tall with a 12 point bracket! Let's take a look at how we called yesterday.

Early in the bracket-making period it seemed as though Kefka was the favorite to advance alongside Marth in this one, but as time went on more people jumped ship in favor of Niko. As it turns out, jumping ship was a wise choice... but everyone was climbing on to the wrong boat! Duke shocked the world by not only powering past Niko and Kefka but doing so with ease, creating a result that only 21 Gurus expected, or about 10%! Let's put up those brilliant predictor's names to give them their props.

After a quick check, the average bracket site-wide currently has a score of 5.95 points. And the average Guru score? Why, we're at... 6.74 points. Whew, for a moment there I seriously thought we might have fallen behind the casuals... talk about embarrassing! But no, we're safe for now.

Then again, if Altair was as big an "obvious" pick here for the casuals as it's looking like it was, we could be in for a hurting come tonight.

Imagine today's match

Lucario / Altair / Guybrush / Isaac

Imagine I have Lucario > Altair (which I actually do). That should give me 2 points right? Now imagine someone who has Guybrush > Lucario. That would be worth 2 points as well. But I think that with this fixed system is only 1 point. And I think that Lucario > Altair would be actually worth 3 points in the fixed system. 2 points would be Altair > Isaac / Guybrush

Are my deductions correct ngamer?

Well, some of you will be. Though don't feel bad, even I almost fell into that trap. Once I took it into real consideration, though, I realized Lucario winning wasn't likely unless Altair was noticeably weaker than Hayabusa.

First off, who the hell is Isaac?
Secondly, why are you calling him a Nintendo character?
Thirdly, only popular Nintendo character suffer Nintendo SFF.

Therefore, using these proofs, we can conclude that Isaac is not getting SFFed. We can also conclude that Lucario is weak, and most of us overestimated him.

Isaac is a Golden Sun character, the series is developed by Camelot but published by Nintendo. It is technically not a Nintendo IP, but since Nintendo publishes it the series overlaps the Nintendo fanbase a bit.

Lucario was a big disappointment, he is probably going to be the biggest in this contest if the protagonist from Assassin's Creed can beat him that easily.

Eeeeexcellent 100ish place leap.

I really don't see where all the doubts about Altair's popularity arose from. He is from a popular game which got loads of critical acclaim and was greatly appealing to both casuals and more serious gamers alike. He has a top notch character design and just oozes badassery everywhere.

He was going against a cult RPG character a super-cult ADVENTURE (on PC no less) character, and a non-first gen Pokemon. Hell, the only reason Lucario didn't lose to Isaac was Brawl, and that factor has obviously been over-hyped.

Such demand for the Fixed Score!

Alright, well, it's a new scoring system that I came up with at the end of last season when everyone was so upset about Cloud > Link being rewarded as the Championship pick, which I agree was stupid.

Now the current official system goes...

if (your winner == actual winner) $score = $score + 2;
OR, if (your winner == actual second place) $score = $score + 1;
AND ALSO if (your second == actual second) $score = $score + 2;
OR, if (your second == actual winner) $score = $score + 1;

Of in terms of an example using yesterday's result:

Altair > Lucario = 4
Lucario > Altair = 2
Altair > Isaac = 2
Isaac > Lucario = 2
Isaac > Altair = 1
Lucario > Isaac = 1
Isaac > Guybrush = 0

Now to me, the perfect score seems right, and so does the 0 score. Not much room for debate there. The pick with Isaac to place second seems okay as well- Lucario finished there instead, but you were at least right about Altair winning first, so that's worth a solid 2 points. What I hate is that having a ton of faith in Isaac and picking him #1 (ie a really stupid pick) and saying Lucario would beat out Altair for second place (another bad pick) is likewise given a full 2 points! Even worse, the much smarter pick of having Isaac win (whoops) but Altair beat out Lucario for second (nice choice) is only given one point. That's just completely unacceptable.

Now obviously, just looking at these numbers, this problem doesn't appear to be a big deal, but keep in mind that in the final match, Altair > Lucario would be worth 128 pts, and so SB's bad scoring decision between the 2pters and 1pter would be costing you 32 points right there.

So here's how my fixed method deals with all those results:

Altair > Lucario = 4 (no change, this is fair)
Lucario > Altair = 3 (was 2, but IMO you should be rewarded a little more for correctly picking both advancing characters)
Altair > Isaac = 2 (no change, its fair to give half credit for this decent pick)
Isaac > Lucario = 1 (instead of 2; you need to be punished for a really bad Isaac call as well as placing Luc over Altair)
Isaac > Altair = 2 (instead of 1; you made a mistake with Isaac, but at least correctly picked Altair to beat Luc)
Lucario > Isaac = 2 (instead of 1; you messed up in placing Altair so low, but at least you correctly had Lucario to beat Isaac)
Isaac > Guybrush = 0 (no change, it's of course fair to give nothing for being 100% wrong)

The formula to assign those values is a little more complicated, but if you'd like to see it:

if (your winner didn't win or even come second, and your second didn't win or come second either) you failed utterly, 0 pts for you;
OTHERWISE, if (you predicted perfectly) $score = $score + 4;
OTHERWISE, if (you just swapped the two positions) $score = $score + 3;
OTHERWISE, if (your winner took first, but your second place guy didn't place) $score = $score + 2;
OTHERWISE, if (your winner didn't place but your second place guy came in first) $score = $score + 2;
OTHERWISE, if (your winner took second and your second place didn't place) $score = $score + 2;
OTHERWISE, if (your winner didn't even place and your second place did take second) $score = $score + 1;

Looking back to the last page, all lhg's deductions there were correct, he just didn't mention a couple of the other picks that could also result in 2 point scores.

I have no idea why i typed Lucario>Altair on my entry for this, as I had it the other way round (getting me 2 more points). Trying to remember a whole division at once I think was the problem. But I don't really care, not going to be a threat to anyone anyway.

Can probably provide a screenshot of my bracket etc, but to be honest, I'll only bother if I'm near the top at the end (where I'd be on the leaderboard anyway). And it isn't likely to happen.

Should check the rest of my bracket, but too lazy.

Eh, you have a point Kleenex... I feel pretty strongly about the 4, 0, 3, and 1 point scorings on this fixed system, but I could understand why both of those bottom two 2 scorers should be worth less than the first 2 pt scorer I mentioned. I'll consider this a little more and maybe make a change there.

On the plus side, at least nearly everyone correctly predicted both characters to advance. Those 16 smart predictors deserve some props IMO, so I'm going to give it to them! Way to go,

Nay ExTha, I'm going to try to stay to a strict schedule and only update the rankings within 5 minutes of polls closing. That way everyone's Guru score and real score will stay synched up and people won't get confused.

Yeah, your score won't be updated automatically after a change in your bracket, you'd still have to wait for the next time I run the score updater. Which will normally be at midnight, but I ran one now to get you back up to date.

Come now, if you pick 3 > 2 > 1 you did everything possible wrong (aside from of course getting #4 seriously involved). Let's say for instance that Bowser wins big tonight, while PW escapes a close scare from Geno. Do you really think that picking

Bowser > Geno > Phoenix

Should be worth as much as saying

Geno > Phoenix > Bowser

? Because to me one of those was very clearly the better pick.

Ng, In regards to the Most Embarrassing Matches Page (and sort of by default, the pages for each match), would it be feasible to have a Guru Box in the sidebar, just above or below the Oracle Box, for the matches in which the Guru existed, of course.

i dunno, you got a lot of fishy upsets to me. gordon is the most questionable. ike is kinda out there too. zack of course will have no trouble beating altair for the division - too bad i didn't actually pick him myself and it's just holding us to a tie there.

Something I just noticed NGamer, when sorting the field by today's pick it sorts it by the winner, then by ID. Is there anyway you could sort them by winner, then by second place?

Thank you very much NGamer. One more thing, when sorting the lists, you can only sort them in one direction. Would it be possible for if you click them again, to have them sort in the opposite direction. For example to look at the lowest scoring gurus or, to sort the list alphabetically from A-Z.

That should probably be the default option anyway, but ...

Went through my bracket and there are two mistakes, probably my fault earlier by typing the wrong thing based of a hand written bracket, rather than the one I entered on the site.

I had Altair > Lucario (already mentioned, after the match, but I understand if you won't change it). Also should be Gordon>Scorpion in Round 1 not the other way round.

Can do a screen capture of the bracket or whatever if you want proof before changing it, let me know. Probably prefer if you didn't change the second one at this stage, because it probably won't happen, but what's on the site is not what I have on my bracket.

Don't foresee any problems in division 3, although I have a sneaky suspicion GlaDOS will make round 2 in favor of Falco (whom I have).

Besides that it's basically waiting for the big one for me -- Ryu > Meta Knight in favor of L-block.

amyvitality [87] and Tohoya [35] have identical brackets. Odd.

Also, the only difference between the brackets of Forceful Dragon [25] and raytan [38] is in Match 23, where Forceful Dragon has Cloud > Midna and raytan has Cloud > Miles Edgeworth. This of course means that either one of them will be eliminated there, or their brackets will score identically from then on.

First guaranteed elimination is in match 23; see #250 in this thread. There's not likely to be an elimination before then; in fact, I wouldn't expect to start seeing them until about the middle of the second round. You never know though.

There are 4 gurus at 32 points, with 46 of the 72 people sitewide at 32 points on the leaderboard. I'm not on the leaderboard yet (will probably/hopefully appear on it tonight, probably under my universal username, Evvivan). I miss being able to look at the updated picks before the match starts. I really think you should reconsider on matches that are very clearly over and update them ahead of time so we can get excited about our positions.

I could do a quick daily rundown of the next day's picks every day in this topic if people want to see it.

Hey N, I was looking through my Guru bracket and it looks like there's a mistake on there. In my actual bracket, I've got Squall > Yoshi in round 1, but here it says Yoshi > Squall. I can take a screencap if you want me to prove it.

I just found a couple mistakes on mine too. I have M Chief > Kirby on both matchups, rather than Kirby > M Chief.

the first four matches may have killed us and L-Block's match will definitely shake things up - but as of right now, the gurus are owning:

we gurus currently hold 87 of the top 471 spots or 18.47% of the top 471 spots. that means 40.85% of the gurus are in the top 1.5% of the site's brackets.

Kaim Argonar and Cecil are the only truly stupid picks I've made this year. We've all been getting owned... so yeah. Kratos Aurion was apparently a dumb pick too but Diddy Kong will end up looking only a little better or worse in the end.

My bracket is toast.

I'm eleven points under a perfect score and thanks to our crazy round 1 and the skimming I did over my bracket (Bowser > Geno...WTF?!), I think I have too many screw ups too early in the contest. And, although I want L-Block to win, I didn't have him leaving round 1 (instead he wins...even with Dog sucking up joke votes) so my Crono > Ryu pick is looking a little shakey now.

My only chance of winning now are in my high-risk-high-reward matches (like Cloud > Midna in round 2) but I'm not seeing it happen anymore...

Guess I'll have to wait and see now.

I only submitted a favorites bracket, well not a favorites bracket but a very quickly submitted bracket with Knuckles winning which would have made the top 50 early if my early picks were good.

Other than that, nah. There's not much incentive for me to submit brackets anymore, I'm not eligible for a prize and I've made top 50 lists loads of times previously, one even on the end list so I dont need the bragging rights or any such. The Guru contest at least has a real prize and an actual incentive for me to win. ^_~

So anyways over in the Crew topic we were discussing how, if WCC can gain support as he rolls along or if Sandbag can combine his joke appeal with some SSB support, we could easily be looking at a Link/Cloud/Block/Bag Final, which in my opinion would tip the scales firmly in Cloud's favor. And with the jokes hurting each other, any result aside from Cloud > Link would seem unlikely. If that's the case...

Even in Brawl, Olimar was one of the most hated characters there. The hardcore smashers found a use for him but for the majority he was just an awkward character to play as. My feeling on him was that a) why would that help him? and b) A small "boost" would get him nowhere near the level he needed to be at.

I really disagree with some of the established "cookie" picks in the Guru contest. To me, lots of "locks" are upsets - Pikachu > Arthas comes to mind. I had no idea that most of my coveted, and at the time, "sexy upsets" were cookie picks >_>

Really? Arthas placed higher than Diablo in his fourpack last year and Ike had to deal with Brawl SFF. It's a wonder that Ike placed as close as he did to Arthas after the rest of the Brawl cast has bombed already.

i just noticed, justin is on the leaderboard now with 60 points, yet his guru bracket only has 59. something's obviously not right <_<

I just overlooked the bracket he gave me twice, and everything matches up correctly in the guru. My guess is that he had Donkey Kong > Tidus instead of the Tidus > Donkey Kong he gave me, which would net him an extra point (giving him 60 instead of 59). Justin, if you're reading this, can you give me a screencap of your bracket up to the current match?

If it's impossible for someone to win they're eliminated. For the person who was eliminated even if all of the rest of the matches went his way there was someone with a higher score than him, so it's impossible for him to win. Thus he's knocked out.

Well, it would probably make it more likely that other people have VERY similar brackets to you, which is why I was eliminated (curse you, Lockes Ragnarok, and your functionally equivalent bracket with the exception of some superior choices earlier in the tournament!)

So in a way, I guess so.

Yeah, in general, taking more risks will keep you alive longer. Taking something like Snake for first place in the final for instance would pretty much guarantee you staying alive until Round 4. But if you go TOO wild and take Travis Touchdown for the overall win, you'd of course fall way behind everyone else in possible points after today's result and end up getting yourself knocked up much earlier.

Speaking of knock outs, added raytan to the eliminated pile.

Surprised so few gave Riku the benefit of the doubt in this one. The guy knocked out Ryu H straight up and then more or less went even with Kratos. I'm expecting a much better battle than our Guru picks indicate.
