- Kirby was highly overrated in 2005, whether from Kirb/Bowser weirdness or Solid **** factor or both
- Kratos' GoWII sold great, GoW flew off shelves in the past year+ as well, and he figures to get another decent boost into near-(non overrated) Kirby level
- regardless of how R1 finishes up, Kirby's going to have to deal with Nintendo/Melee leaching from either Donkey Kong or Marth

And yet... 124 take Kirby for the win anyways? Just can't wrap my head around it.

...my word. I knew L-Block would be strong in this format, but this is just ridiculous. At first I was a little upset, given how I ended up deciding to place Kirby second behind Snake next round, but now that I look it over I've got to agree with the general consensus coming out of Stats. Not only CAN Blocky take second next round, he could very well be the favorite to do so, assuming he finally gets a fully iconic in-game shot. In which case he wouldn't hurt my bracket a bit, since the only people picking him today had him advancing behind Kirby or DK, and no one picked him behind Snake for R3.

Getting back to the Guru, I've added those late eliminations from yesterday. Also, please update your sheets LtK/Rocky to reflect these two changes:

- somdude, longtime FF supporter and advocate, actually had Leon > Pikachu yesterday

Well, Kirby's making a nice percentage rise here with the ASV, and Blocky is slowly taking steps backwards, but the poor puffball just can't turn it around sharply enough to start cutting into that lead. So, time to call it. And whoops, didn't see that Axe had actually called this upset! Even so, this remains the least-likely result of the Contest so far (since 3 had Big Boss advancing, and 2 picked Ammy to move to R3 alongside Dante).

And boy, did it ever lay waste to the rankings! We're now left with a mere 100 Gurus still alive with any kind of title hopes. Check it out, friend.

Sure Ryu H looked great last round, but how much of that strength was the result of being the lone standout in the midst of a bunch of anime-styled Square and/or RPG kids? If the answer is "alot," then Riku figures to be the stand-out entrant this time around... could that be enough? Another Guru Cookie that's always had me shaking my head in puzzlement. I know we expected Squall to be a monster this year, figured he was underrated against Snake last year if anything, figured the format would be decently kind to him, but since when do you bet on FF7 getting SFFed harder than Kingdom Hearts? And since when do you bet on the person who beat her opponent 66-33 to suddenly get the short end of the stick when they meet up in a 4-way format? There's enough overlap and weirdness here where I could have seen it being a close result between Aeris and Sora in terms of Guru picks, but the ease with which Sora won this Cookie is quite strange to me.

*sigh* Can't believe I'm out already. Aside from the obvious mistake of underestimating Master Chief, I've really liked my bracket this year. With strong, high scoring updates left in Vincent advancing past Crono and Leon riding Nintendo power to beat out Dante, there's no way I should have been knocked out this early... it's almost unfair how freakishly smart Moltar has looked all bracket. Ngamer, one more thing I think may be cool for the site someday: I think a way to arrange the main page by people's scores by score alone would be nice, instead of arranging it by people's scores who are alive followed by people's scores who are eliminated. I think that could make it more fun for people who are already eliminated, plus it would make it a bit easier for people like me who are trying to figure out an estimated mean/median/mode for the scores in the Guru (especially when compared to how GameFAQs in general is doing...that's always fun, ha)...

...granted, at the end of the contest both of those issues will be settled. It may be something to think about for future contests though or -- if it's easy -- to apply in this contest before the end of it.

Good news HaR! Not only has your wish been granted... it WAS granted all along! I anticipated this problem when I first set the site up last year, and so both rankings methods were put into use. The main rankings on the site of course show only those still Alive on top, BUT, the pasteable text-only rankings in the box on the bottom use the other method. Everyone gets stacked up based first on their total points, then by if they're still alive, THEN by how soon they entered their bracket. All I do there is marked the Killed Gurus with a * at the end of their name.

Speaking of killed Gurus, three more tossed overboard today! With those guys gone and most of the rest of us getting the full 8 points, here's how things have been left:

I've come to notice I'll be on even ground with Moltar if Auron outdoes Ryu and we see MC get first place again (even advance ahead of him if Ganon doesn't advance). I think both are very realistic (and I like to think likely, but I don't want to jinx it!)...then from there, seeing whether Dante or Leon is stronger ought to decide whether Moltar or I finish ahead of the other. I've not checked many other people's brackets, but I know I'm the highest Guru with Cloud > Auron right now...that could be a crucial push in the right direction if it pulls through. With any luck, I have a good shot of winning this (damn you Ganon...in advance)...

Oh man, Stats last night was cracking me up so hard. How did no one but tranny realize that MM always has a fantastic start and then collapses the whole rest of the day? I could understand thinking he might have a shot, but the amount of bandwagon jumping I was witnessing was just ridiculous. Why are we that desperate for an upset, in the midst of a Contest that's been full of them?

In any case this Samus win has been applied, and the effect on the rankings is huge! Remember that points have doubled once again, so correctly saying MM > Samus was worth 16 points, not just 8.

Despite having everything going against her (pic factor, LFF, hot MM start), Samus is going to survive and advance and look good doing so, making this another smart pick for the Cookie. But tomorrow? Welp, after his great overnight Ryu took the kind of day-long dive we know and love him for, but all Cloud left for the others during the Day was crumbs, and SFF didn't allow Auron to pick up enough of them to make up the difference. I realize Cloud's percentage got a good-sized boost thanks to all the Auron votes he stole, but, good golly is he ever a monster in this format.

Here are the percentages the 10 smartest (aka the Top Ten!) Oracles predicted for Cloud today: 43, 46, 42, 44, 46, 45, 44, 44, 45, 44. And instead he's trying to push to 50! There's no way a character we come into a match knowing so much about should still be able to shatter expectations like this, especially not late in a Contest, and most certainly not against respectable competition like what was fielded today.

ANYWAYS, Cloud > Ryu applied, many extra Gurus lay still on the Killing Fields, and here's how it all looks.

Tomorrow has been called the most boring of all Round Three's matches, but I have to strongly disagree. Because... uh... alright fine, it's not a good match. I know the following is irrevelent as far as the contest goes, but for accuracy's sake, I found two errors when I was checking my guru score vs my bracket score.

I'm listed with Auron > Bowser, however, in the bracket topic, I had Bowser > Auron posted. So I should have two less points from that.

Now for my error. I'm not sure how I botched this up, but I must had a fanboy moment and posted Mario > Sephiroth, when in my actual bracket it is reversed.

I love that the lowest scores that can be found in the Gurus still smokes the two modes or the median found in the general bracket stats (163 > 144, 145, or 147), plus the Gurus even have someone who is beating all of those by 100+ points (147 + 100 = Moltar). Every Guru is in the top 25% on GameFAQs, almost every Guru is in the top 20% on GameFAQs, .and Gurus currently have 26% of the leaderboard (ranging from #1 to #50). Also, if you're in the top half of the Guru rankings (204+ points) -- eliminated or not -- you are in the top 1.25% on GameFAQs.

Barring something screwy, this domination should only continue until the end of the contest. We're cool.

Eh, LFF is so weird though. After Round One I was positive that Aeris had barely been SFFed by Squall and was sure she'd be able to do the same the next round, but then BAM, add a little competition and she folded like a house of cards. I really think Subs will make a game of it.

Eh, I'm not saying Sora has a great chance... it's highly likely Squall will get more of Aeris's votes... but they were close enough last round that I think there's a chance that something weird can happen. No real reason, though, Squall's the strong favorite in my eyes no doubt, but I don't think Sora's going to fold under Sub-Zero because of him being there.

Unless there's still too many scenarios to cover in one post, then I guess we could wait.

Moltar wins if anything else happens...as well as if Luigi OR Pikachu>Dante, Snake>Sonic and Sonic>Snake happen. Moltar would beat out Haste2 with that one.

I'm just going to use this post to help look over the chances of where the tie-breaker goes if Moltar and I tie. Moltar's TB is 149,009 and my TB is 132,000...so the over/under mark is 140,504(.5) -- if it goes over that, it's Moltar's...and if it goes under, then it's mine. I'm already fearing it's heavily in Moltar's favor there, but I want to look it all over anyway: Here are the vote totals of each match that the four characters in our Championship match have so far (Cloud/Link/Solid/Sonic):

It makes me super happy to see that the average is about 2,000 under the over/under mark; I didn't expect that. I also like that Cloud's and Link's matches in R3 have less votes than their R2 matches (and even R1) for Link...

...but I know better than to get my hopes up yet. Cloud and Link both have surpassed the over-under mark in every match they've been in so far, and the championship will have them together. Also, Solid and Sonic both sharply jumped in vote totals from their first two rounds to R3. We've also only seen one full match that had two Noble Niners so far (Link/Crono) and today's match should give us an idea of how vote totals look with three Noble Niners in a poll too...but I suspect it's not going to look good for my TB when four are in the same poll. Just for kicks, here's the BR vote totals too:

Came to this topic to say "MM is on the line!" But I see thats been updated there already =). Not to mention, if Pikachu hadn't shocked us, Luigi > MC was very plausible. We'll see, tomorrow.

Well I made it this far on my big upset pick being Mario topping Seph (relied on Vincent and Mario both holding up - looks like only one pulled through for me.) My second upset was then Cloud > Link (b/c cloud vs link/samus/mario lol EZ win), then back to Link > cloud in finals.

I'm happy with my choice, b/c it got me this far, and as it turns out I could have actually won this thing had one slim chance gone through. And I think cookie cutting it means you need a lot more slim chances to beat out the other cookies. Or you can just pwn like MM, I think his only mistake has been Master Chief, really! We'll see, obv its not over, but he has really impressed me.

I'd be extremely confident if Leon were in Pikachu's place. It's clear that there was a tremendously unexpected overlap between Dante and Leon, and I had a gut feeling that they could have dragged Master Chief into the void, letting Luigi rule as the lone Nintendo character and non-tough guy option. Even now, I still don't think Dante will win, but I can't see Luigi beating Chief.

I will say this, though: had the Chief/Luigi/Dante/Leon setup actually happened, Luigi would be far too logical a choice to be considered a "crazy upset." The crazy part, if anything, was getting them all here.

MM game, eh? That's actually not a bad idea. Maybe I'll choose MM2 on the outside chance that I win.

Ugh... I know the bad scoring system has helped me at least twice already, but now that those incredibly wrong Sonic > Snake pickers are about to double my points today, I've suddenly come to the realization of how upsetting this is! Come on Snake, stop messing around and make up these 400 votes!

Regarding joke entries... whoa, hold up there guys! You're confusing the Oracle with the BOP. Slowflake is the one who allowed DDR into the finals and then decided to not allow any more bad brackets because of how bad it messed up his 2004 numbers. For the Guru, you're welcome to enter as wacky a bracket as you'd like, just so long as you

- don't enter that wacky bracket under an alt and your real one under your normal name
- honor the winner in your sign once your bad bracket takes last
- nominate the winner's choice like you promised

Back to today... refusing to call it against Snake yet. But I may not be able to hold out much longer.

Wow, I didn't realize until now that I might finish on the leaderboard...especially since I have Snake in second place next round. Then again, it depends on how many half-serious brackets had L-Block getting somwhere.

Whoa, only earned 1/4 points on that result, and yet I only fall from 39th to 44th on the leaderboard! Thank goodness for Snake being listed as the #1 option in the bracket- saved us Snake > Sonic people a ton of places, since all the casuals had him finishing first as well.

I think your best bet is hoping for L > MC, Link > L.... I don't think anybody else can top Cloud =)

Well I was right about Samus doing a better job of resisting SFF... congrats to her, this should keep those Samus > Seph fires burning for another offseason at least! But I really messed up on Link- never though Seph could take a tumble big enough to let him into 40% range. There's no doubting this result, so its been applied and now things look like so:

Doma to 174th is much closer to his historic trend, but history ALSO predicted a similar result for Lopen, and yet here he is hanging around in 2nd! Unfortunately he needs a big showing out of Master Chief to stick around there, and with Blocky in the way it doesn't look too likely... still, no reason to give up hope, with as dedicated a fanbase as MC has. Speaking of which, here's our initial thoughts.
