Sora wins with 55.35% of the vote!

Which was actually a direct result, so there's no doubting that it's accurate. But I'm not happy with Alucard's pic for that match, and it certainly seems that Castle > SotN > Alucard, and pretty easily, whereas Sora seems a better representation for KH (they performed alike against Harvest Moon and Agent 47, both expected to be very low fodder).

But what convinces me is a certain other direct matchup, namely the one from 2004 where I told myself "Sure, this game just beat the best that the Xbox fanbase has to offer, but now it's going up against Square, the King of GameFAQs! No way its Cinderella run continues from here out."

Fool me twice, shame on me.

Well it ALWAYS cuts into their "advantage." Losing percentage means you're doing comparitively worse than you were doing earlier.

But you can be losing percent, and still be gaining advantage in votes. so a drop from, say, 56 percent to 52 doesn't necessarily mean that the winner is losing the lead. A drop from 50 to 48 percent does. Big difference.

No, there's no a big difference. It just means that the advantage they had earlier was big enough to offset the drop in momentum and still gain votes, albeit at a signifincantly reduced pace.

The only difference is how big of the advantage they start with. Castlevania went from getting 58% of the votes within an early time frame to as low as 54% in a later time frame. in the end if ended with about 55%. Now, it was in no trouble because it started out high. Had it not been as powerful earlier and started at 54%, we would have had a very interesting match. The fact that it didn't lose enough momentum to lose votes means nothing for the purpose of data analysis.

And of course, by judging its loss of momentum against Halo in the day, we can apply these patterns to other matches as well. If Kingdom Hearts is similar to Halo with the day vote, then Castlevania is quite simply in alot of trouble.

castlevania, even while losing percentage, never had halo really cut into its lead even during the day. If anything, halo stalled at best, votewise, which still brought castlevania's percentage down, as tends to happen to the leader when things are split about 50/50.

I understand what you're getting at with the momentum, though. but lowering the percentage is all moot unless the contestant behind also starts to cut into the vote gap.

No. Statistically, Kingdom Hearts doesn't even need to have a day vote half as strong as Halo's to win this match. If Halo can cut Castlevania's vote intake by 4% that's plenty. When it's 50-50, all Kingdom Hearts needs is 1 measly percent.

The fact that "lol Castlevania still gained votes" is a pointless is faulty argument that is not statistically relevant to the process of day and night vote shifts.

I believe in "momentum" because that is correct. For example, someone who will drop from 60% to 55% over the course of the day is considered to have "lost" the day vote because his performance at night was stronger than his performance in the day. Likewise, someone who does the opposite is said to have a weak night vote and a strong day vote.

The fact is, Castlevania performs better at night than it does in the day, consistently. The actual vote gains and whatnot do no matter in that sense. And if you perform "worse" than going 50-50, you lose.

Doesn't matter that KH lost votes in some of those polls. The point is that, in these KH matches, there has been a major voter shift between Night and Day. Therefore, if the trend holds and there is a positive Day shift to KH once again, it will not only gain percent, but also cut into CV's lead or go out in front. Because a voter shift of just a few % will result in a major vote turnaround, because the games are currently going 50/50.

This is why we call them "voting trends," and they are based on percentage shifts, not necessarily gaining votes in that particular matchup.

The only reason votes were not chipped into in other cases is merely because the differences were too great to start out. They all "lose momentum". The only difference is that if the games are too far apart score-wise to start with, losing momentum will still result in gains. Obviously when something starts 50-50, losing momentum will result in a loss

Not quite, in that Castlevania's peak percentage came at 9:10 AM EST, however it was considerably lower at this point during the match than it was at the end of the match. The night vote still exists, it just kicks in at about the same time as it always did (around 3AM EST), which is to say, the opening hour of the match is probably closer to the day vote than the night vote (for all that it's rather muddled with bracket voters and CATS armies so it's hard to get meaningful data out of it).

Is there really a need for yet another discussion about momentum? Obviously momentum exists. It's so obvious that anyone who denies it will continue denying it, no matter the facts.

As for it's application to this match, the actual night/day swing in this match is quite unpredictable IMO. Kingdom Heart's previous history says one thing, but CV/Halo and KH/Harvest Moon say another. We really don't have much idea if either game has any sort of advantage right now.

Between 3 AM and 9 AM Castlevania earned 58.9% of the votes

Between 9 AM and 4 PM Castlevania earned 53.5%% of the votes

There was definitely an advantage for Halo that came at that time. It just happened that Halo had a very good start that made Castlevania's % start out low to begin with so we never had a really good indicator of Castlevania's strong night vote.

On that note, metroidcomposite is right in that I forgot that the first couple hours are more like the day vote than the night vote.

If this is true, than what we're seeing now is already KH's day vote and that it is 50-50. In which case, starting in half an hour to an hour, we will see CV build a bit of a lead, maybe approaching 51%.

Then the day vote will hit, and as we see now, it may go 50-50 or KH may be at a SLIGHT advantage.

In which case, CV actually does have a good chance to win

Nay, no one would have cheated for GTA until much later in the poll, when things started looking desperate... I think it's just a case of this match coming in with alot of hype and excitement here on the board, and the Contest naturally picking up steam as the matches keep getting better. Plus it was a Thursday night so everyone is still home, unlike what you'd see if this were happening tomorrow.

being that I LOVE both game series way too much to even vote, i refuse to do so in this case. Now, that said, I wish i had rethought my entery when i set it up because I'd like to think Zelda would win, but without thinking i kinda christmas tree'd the thing and somehow left halo in the lead. I know I know, stupid on my part... Espically since more and more halo Fan's i've met had left the game for other things...

This is the sickest comeback I've yet to see in these contests. It's not the comeback itself I'm surprised by, but rather the amount of votes KH is catching in. Usually a comeback is long and painfilled, with a couple of back-and-forths, but this is almost slaughter.

Kinda funny that the updates stop when KH takes the lead. And coming back 100 or so votes every 15 minutes isn't a massive comeback. That seems pretty slow to me.
