Explained!

lolx tells me

Master Chief (2005c) VS Alucard (2005c)
Master Chief wins with 62.84 of the vote!

Halo (2004g) VS Castlevania: SotN (2004g)
Halo wins with 72.78 of the vote!

But SotN was behind massive OoT/GE underperformance, Halo was SC-cheat boosted, Alucard got a crappy pic against Sora, Sora got Snake Eaten, and MC had sword-factor against Crono. So really, this one is going to be tighter than you might expect.

Important Reminder!

Do not get overly excited when Castlevania gets out to a lead in the early portion of this match. Keep in mind that this is the same Halo fanbase that allowed Donkey Kong to gain a 55% advantage on Master Chief 5 hours into the poll last Summer!

Yes, Castlevania will win the Night Vote, and may even do so handily. But there is going to be a gigantic Day Vote turnaround in this one, just as we've always seen for Halo. And then, on the other hand, Castlevania will have a good shot at the comeback in the final hours.

So don't call this one over early! At least, not unless Halo jumps out to a large lead after 3 hours... then, it would be over.

If a new franchise like Halo beats a legendary franchise like Castlevania, then people are stupid. I'm not saying Halo is a bad franchise (it's completely the opposite), but Castlevania has the games and history to back it up, something Halo lacks (only 2 games?). My vote goes with Castlevania.

You could make the same argument about, say, Madden NFL vs Super Smash Bros (if that match were to happen, which it won't). Number of games does not dictate how good a series is. How long the series has been running is never the whole story (for instance, Castlevania wasn't really noteworthy until SotN, in that Contra was probably more popular before then; Castlevania's early history is hardly relevant to me).

the problem is there are a lot of people out there who either
a) have a memory that only lasts a year
b) think that only new games are good

because of Sorrow, this won't affect CV so much, but that's why so many so-called legendary series struggle against newcomers

Got halo pegged, but odd, seemed like the fan base for it was just so much larger and determined.

Not to mention everything since symphony of the night was a flop for castlevania.

You make a strong point, TnA. With the poll running this early, Castle has three fewer hours to pull in the Night Vote and make up some ground, as Alucard did on Sora. CV also won't have the crucial final hour to work with, the one where Halo fumbled away the night vote and gave its lead back to StarCraft.

Fine HM.

At this point last year, Donkey Kong had a 726 vote lead on MC. After allowing DK to expand that lead to 2044, MC stormed back to win by 1568 votes. That's a 3612 vote turnaround under very similar circumstances.

We'll see how big of a lead Castlevania builds up. I have faith that it'll be a good 3,000+ before the day vote even begins to aid Halo. And any remaining second night should help Castlevania recover what little lead Halo might have built up by then.

Of course, if Halo's day vote is even more monstrous than Master Chief's then things get tricky ...

...They aren't very similar in any way aside from Halo's losing at the beginning. We've got different hours, more voters, more contest entries, and the biggest difference between Donkey Kong and Castlevania is that there's a big, big difference between Donkey Kong and Castlevania. >_>;

The fanbase, percieved level of maturity, and the way the series has gone immediately come to mind as differences. The day vote should favor Halo, but it's being quite overrated. Especially once you throw in the fact that the contest has more votes.

How does getting more votes overall lessen the impact of a Day Vote? It just means the Day Vote swing, like the Night Vote swing, is going to be bigger.

And yeah, people are taking the Halo day swing for granted. But considering we've seen it in every single match that MC or Halo have been involved in, I don't see why they shouldn't.

Lemme put it this way: If all Halo/MC matches result in a 120% vote total from the usual, and there's a steady 30% of that which always exists for Halo/MC, then it has 1/4 of the vote. If the votes jump from 80,000 usual to 100,000 usual, the proprtion would stick. But because I'm lazy, I'll just use those numbers: 1/4 of 80k is 20k, while 100k has 25. Your remainder is now 60,000 other votes to worry about vs. 75,000 votes to worry about - a 15,000 difference. Now, if you raise it, the same thing happens. That basically says that there's a static group of people that keep constant to the %. I don't find that true, but I do find it more accuracte that some people will vote for it, but it's a number not percent (ie, 20,000 will vote for MC always, which of course makes a bigger deal in matches with less votes). Halo's constantly tried to win with massive vote totals, but when that number is raised... well, that can be a problem for it. A 2,000 vote swing isn't as much of a big deal when you've got 50 times that as opposed to 40.

I feel that

- Castlevania, with little ability to rally, is not the final-hour threat that StarCraft was
- Halo as a series should have an even better Day Vote than MC the character
- H2's massive Live success will make it even more appealing to day voters than H was in 04
- the larger pic and higher poll position are favorable to games that rely on more "casual" voters
- halo.bungie.org will be linking in within the next 8 hours

And so I steadfastly refuse to give up faith in Halo!

Well, with the CV series as a whole drawing upon GBA, DS, and even NES votes, I don't think it will quite die as much in the day as Alucard would. But...

Don't get your hopes up. SotN is by far the most popular game in the series, and the rest of them aren't exactly shunned by the creatures of the night (heh, heheh). The best entries in the series of late may be on Nintendo systems, and the early adventures as well, but that doesn't mean the people who play them are any different.

Day/Night is seperated more by mainstream/cultish than any other factor. Halo and Nintendo are huge mainstream names, they do better in the day. Sonic's not far off and guess where he's best at. RPGs, Castlevania and a lot of other names that simply aren't as big do better at night.

Mainstream Nintendo games/characters are noticably stronger during the day. Let there be no doubt on that. Every game/character is capable of holding it's own to a degree during its off-hours, but they are ALL stronger at one point or another of the day by a noticable amount.

I've having a very hard time seeing Castlevania, even as a series, stronger than Starcraft alone. But I voted for Castlevania, my bracket is screwed anyway. No point in not voting for the series I find better anymore.

I think people who think that Halo is going to win without a doubt don't understand how old Castlevania is....it's not some new game. The series it very old and has a huge following and it grows with every new game. It won't go down with out a very violent fight from it's fans.

Besides, even if soemthing fishy happened in SC vs. Halo it would have happened later in the match and it'd have been in favor of SC. That just shows Halo has some pretty huge comeback potential.

More vote totals = Hurting Halo. It tried to win matches on that, but right now we're at an all time high. It was a more condensed fanbase before and let the series come out a bit stronger. Now? ...Well it's going to have a harder time.

The big votes will be around 2-7 for Halo, and it should win updates then. But it's also true that CV gets no hate, and is percieved as a mature series, with a kickass name. Castlevania's a good name, and that'll get votes by people not playing both. It's also a series seen as mature, which means that there's none of this anti-voting the old school series nonsense that happens.

I honestly did not see Castlevania winning this one. Heck, I thought Halo would wipe the floor with Castlevania on its way to the final four. I forgot that the casual gamer vote is never strong in this contest. Halo will once again leave as an early disappointment.
