Given this season's nomination system, the autobids, and CJay's warning of a "twist," the most reasonable line of thought dictates that Character Battle V will consist of a 32-man Male Bracket across from a 32-woman Female Bracket, with the 2006 winner going on to face opponents in the new "Tournament of Champions," namely Mario, Sephiroth, Cloud, and Link.

This news has upset many people, and although I can understand why, I would like to show that, despite this odd format, Summer 2006 still has the potential to be one of the most unpredictable and exciting brackets in history. Here's an example of what I feel would be a very solid 2006 bracket; feel free to test it out for yourself by predicting the winner of these matches.

Hmm... I don't know, I think I'd give Bowser a pretty good shot against Sonic. I know the Koopa's a little overrated in the stats because of that silly pic Snake was given, but with New Mario Bros doing so well and Sonic acting more and more Nintendo every day, it seems a real possibility. And as we've seen, something weird usually goes on when you get Mario and Sonic together....

An then, of course, we can't say for sure when the matchup would happen, but if it's late enough for TP anticipation to be in full gear, I certainly wouldn't entirely count Ganon out against Crono.

There are lots of ways you can mix this one that I like better than the current arrangement.

Eh, Ness, Frog, Tommy, Ryu H, and Kefka are no loss in my opinion - in fact, the best thing about having only 32 males is getting rid of guys like that. Frog was exciting in 2k4, but after last year there's really no reason to bring him back - he's not that popular. Ness just the umpteenth SSBM character, which we don't need - outside SSBM he's got no more going for him than Vyse or Ryo Hazuki. Tommy is old news (although he's the most interesting of the five as casual bait), Ryu H was only interesting when his strength was unknown, and Kefka is a chump. If we lose CATS or Gordon I'll be sad, but I'm not sorry to see the lower midcarders go.

And that's not a bad idea for the ToC... it's actually what I had in mind originally. But then I realized that the only two matches there that I really want to see are Samus/Crono and Link/Cloud, and the version I used gets us both. As you pointed out for some of these, Mario/Crono has become interesting as a historical spectacle only, Samus/Mario is an embarrassment, Mario/Seph has been done more than enough, and no one wants to see Cloud/Seph or Mario/Link again. So it's basically trading Crono/Samus for Samus/Seph, and I think I still lean toward the former.

Some of the first round matches are brutal. Specifically Yoshi/Shadow, Magus/Master Chief, Kirby/Ryu, Zero/Auron, Luigi/DK, and Marle/Celes (hooray fodder vs. fodder match!).

Tough second round matches: Rikku/Yuna, Jill/Chun-Li.

Only third round match that has the potential to be tough is Snake/Vincent because of how close Vincent is to Bowser in strength, but I think Snake has enough breathing room to secure a victory.

The big match of round 4 and of the female side of the bracket is Tifa/Aeris.

From then on, it's relatively easy, though Crono does have a chance at upsetting Samus.

Hm... I'll agree that Yuffie has too much potential to be wasted against Samus; my mistake. And sure, Tifa/Aeris with the winner getting Zelda would be awesome... I guess I just don't feel comfortable awarding a #1 seed to Peach/Yuffie/Chun Li, when it seems so clear that the Big Four are going to be way out of their league. But if we went ahead with it, maybe we could punish Peach by having to get through the winner of Yuna/Rikku, then Yuffie from the bottom of the division, before the winner of all that mess jobs to Samus. Hm... I like it.

Same kind of mental block with moving Ganon down to a 3 to force a tango with Vincent. Sure, it would be an epic clash, and the winner should have every chance of upsetting Snake in the next round... but it comes at the cost of giving Crono a free ride to the Final Four. And call me crazy (again), but Ganon has always worked so well as a mini-Link/Mario that I think he would be at his best facing Crono, and perhaps bringing his A game on that day would be enough.

If I know anything about these contests, it's that Ganon/Crono would not be a close match. 55/45, maybe, but never in doubt. Ganon lost to Magus, remember? Sure he's improved since then, but not that much. Vincent/Ganon would be a much better set up.

Knuckles showed us what putting any kind of faith in 2003 Magus' 35% on Link will do for your bracket. CT emulation peaked a couple years back and its character have had nowhere to go but down since then, and that's just where they've gone. I still contend that all we need is the littlest bit of TP excitement, and he can make a game of that.

And come now Kax, that was 3 years ago on a GameFAQs where characters performed vastly differently than they do today. Knuckles showed us what putting any kind of faith in 2003 Magus' 35% on Link will do for your bracket. CT emulation peaked a couple years back and its character have had nowhere to go but down since then, and that's just where they've gone. I still contend that all we need is the littlest bit of TP excitement, and he can make a game of that.

Thing is, Ganon has HAD TP excitement - there was quite a bit more hype for the game in 2004 and 2005 than there is now. He's not getting any kind of boost until the game actually comes out, and when it does, he's still not getting some KH-type boost unless he's awesome in the game.

Most people thing Ganon/Vincent would be a close match. Do you disagree, or do you really think he can gain 5.38% on Crono in one year? Should that match happen, I'd be glad to make some kind of bet.
