Ugh... next Spring, remind yourself to NOT remind me how much effort it takes to get this Contest set up, on the front end. With an astounding 123(!) brackets to keep track of this year, you may rest assured that many an hour went into getting this Summer's Guru spreadsheet all working and up to date. But hey, it's all worth it, because now we should be all set for what could very well be the best Contest in history. Speaking of which, here's the first place to look for all the latest Guru tourney updates:

All the brackets are there (be sure to double check them for errors, BTW) and the standings are up to date, including the handy columns which tell you who was predicted as Champ and/or ToC Champ, tiebreakers, and the total number of non-cookie cutter picks made. Next up I will look into the number of duplicate brackets we have (not many, I can already tell) and then move on to the Stats tab, comparing our thoughts against those of the Board.

Problems

applekid: your bracket was entered incorrectly; you still need to submit a prediction for DK VS Sam and Tommy VS Kefka

The other problems I've marked are just tiebreakers, I'll have to go back and double check those numbers to see if maybe I just missed them.

The bottom 40 or so are ranked by how soon they entered their bracket. The others between 9 and 80 are ranked very strangely, and it's a very long, very uninteresting story, so I won't get into it. But don't worry, there will be opportunities to move yourself to the head of the class throughout the tourney, just like you saw Ulti accomplish a moment ago. So keep your eyes peeled.

Signups are a tradition, and one that we're going to uphold. The Contest started out as a friendly sig bet between some people in the Stats topic years back, and that's how I'd like it to stay... It doesn't try to be a board-wide Contest like the Oracle or the PPC or any of the hundreds of other topics being voted in every day, and because of the immense popularity of Stats these days, it doesn't need to.

Incidentally, the title "Guru" is meant to be taken with a grain of salt. We're from the Stats topic, and we spend way too much time analysing these Contest from every angle; that doesn't mean all of our brackets are going to turn out perfectly, nor do we claim so.

For crap's sake, people, Guru signups aren't some obscure offseason tradition requiring a trial-by-fire initiation ritual.

You're able to join for well over a month prior to each Contest, from the time nominations open until bracket lockdown on the eve of the opening match. And I seriously doubt that anyone who follows Stats even 40% of the time could have missed the signup listing, as it's pasted all over the topics for weeks at a time, especially when the most debating is taking place (ie, right after the new bracket comes online).

Ah, so as soon as Freeman knocks out that tin can, MMX can kiss his Championship dreams goodbye, eh? Good, good.

The Falcon and Lopen messups were my bad, I went back and checked. All fixed now though. I've also found the tiebreakers I was missing (except, of course, in the cases where none was posted... those folks have been rewarded with a nice round 0). Only two issue remains, as far as I can see.

Hogasm - You didn't enter picks for Sonic/Diablo or Tifa/Luigi. Sonic wins later on, so you must have picked him, but still don't know for sure on that Tifa match.

cdog - Ugh... You're... not very good at this, I'm afraid. There were about 5 earlier versions of your bracket, but as you kept making changes you kept deleting them, until you had deleted every bracket you posted in the topic. All that remains of your picks in the topic is that Tommy beats Kefka (heh, look what late changes get you) and Ganon beats Auron. Please post your entire, final bracket here, as soon as possible.

And now for some fun! This year's average tiebreaker is 60180. The average amount of times that a Guru picked against the cookie cutter bracket this year is 4.56, very nice. But with all the talk about this being the most difficult bracket ever, just how does that number compare?

The Cookie-Breaker Ranks
1. Great Game Contest - 6.40
2. Characters IV - 4.56
3. Characters III - 4.08
4. Villians - 3.06

So, a significantly more difficult bracket than last Summer, but Spring '04 is still the Champ. The thing to remember, though, is that many of those Games disagreements happened only because the real Championship (FF7/Ocarina) took place 3 rounds earlier than it should have. And without Division 128, of course, it would have been by far the easiest bracket ever. Remember also that despite last Spring's reputation as easy, 3+ cookie-breaks in only half of a Contest is nothing to sneeze at.

Why did I start a fight I could not win?

It means that the only difference between MMX's bracket and my bracket is that I took Freeman, and he took Leon. So if Leon wins, I can't win the Guru Contest, even if I pick the entire Contest correctly after that and score... 214 points. That's why it's better to pick more upsets, as there's less chance of being eliminated in the early going.

The NEW Board 8's Best Female Summer Contest Guru

I'm not sure if this ever got answered or not. If I take 2005 champ to beat Sepheroth, and s/he does, does it matter if I got the champ right in the first place in order to get the 8 points. For example, I've got Samus winning, and then beating Seph. If Mario won the main contest, and then went on to beat Seph, would I still get 8 points, since technically in the bracket it says 2005 champ.

The Gurus VS Board 8

Traditionally, those from the Stats topic have out-predicted the rest of the Contest Board, and by a fairly large margin. If the early results of this very difficult bracket are any indication, however, we may be in for a rude awakening in the coming months. Here are the biggest Round One differences in opinion between the Gurus and the Board.

The Gurus show in rise in confidence when it comes to...

CJ. Ouch. Talk about starting off on the wrong foot. We didn't give Ness anything like the credit he deserved, instead creating a significant 6.00% boost for the GTA "star". Now the question is whether or not this trend is going to come back to bite us again, with...

Tommy. Apparently Kefka has burned us one too many times, as we turned our back on the FF villain to the tune of 4.51%. After seeing Ness take care of business just a little bit ago, we're not looking nearly as smart as we did a few weeks back, now are we? Still, Tommy might surprise us and prove much stronger than CJ in the end... We'll have to wait and see.

Vincent. Looks like, in the mind of the Guru, Board favorite Kerrigan isn't much more than Board hype; we're putting our money with old reliable FF7. 5.41% of our money, to be exact. Does the distrust of Blizzard characters carry over to the Diablo series, though?

Diablo. Nope. After a strong showing this Spring, the Gurus feel quite confident in the Lord of Destruction. 2.09% more confident than the rest of the board, in fact. This prediction, at least, is looking solid, given Lloyd's crappy performance a few days back.

Luigi. TJF or not, Gurus aren't buying the idea that one of the most classic characters of all time is going to job to a girl robot, of all people. Squall might have been able to do it, but 2.36% more Gurus feel that KOS is no Squall.

Ocelot. He didn't exactly tear it up this Spring, but 2.63% of the Gurus felt he didn't need to, given that his opponent is only Pac-Man, the most washed up Old Schooler around. Not a single Guru believes that the yellow dot can pull the 2/7 upset in this one.

That leaves us with only one more Guru confidence boost to cover... But we've saved the best for last.

Zelda. You don't bet against Nintendo, in general, but you REALLY don't bet against anything Zelda. That appears to be the line of thought I'm seeing coming out of the Stats topic, as our Princess confidence rises 7.70% when compared against that of the rest of the Board. Vivi falls from being backed by 19% to less than 12% of the Experts. Or should I say... "Experts"? Well, we won't have to wait long to find out, as tomorrow could either kill us or make us look brilliant. Here's hoping for brilliant.

The Wall of 'Shame' (aka unoriginality)

Thanks to CJay's hard work in creating this difficult bracket, we were much, much better at predicting uniquely this year. Yep, originality was at an all-time high, with a full 103 out of 124 brackets looking unlike anyone else's. That's an impressive 83.06% overall!

note: Actually, I'm not 100% on these being the ONLY identical brackets. But I'm sure that if I missed any, LtK will straighten us out a little down the road. And now, let the insulting begin!

The following 5 Gurus wouldn't know originality if it ran them over in a dump truck. They picked a... *shudder* straight up Cookie-Cutter bracket. Sephirot, Chinballz, stepintoarena, Tai, ubarn. I bet their mothers are real proud.

The following 4 Gurus thought that merely backing Alucard would make them all cool and unique. They were wrong. Dead wrong. Compman, Tjian, Garsh, Kevin.

The following 2 Gurus "obviously have brain damage to begin with", according to Brett. They also appear to be mentally handicapped in the originality department. (Took Mario over both Samus and Crono). GammaRay, Jman

The following 2 Gurus need upsets from Alucard and Kefka to win it all. Speaking of needs, they are also lacking an original bone in their body. swirldude, Brainstruck.

No, it's looking completely ridiculous. I think of Tidus in a similar manner to that of Frog. Frog, no matter his opponent always stays close to the 50% mark due to an extremely loyal fanbase who will vote him over any other competitor, and not much else. Tidus, no matter his opponent always recieves a significant amount of anti-votes (can't be proven... but so I think) PLUS the strength of his opponent causes him to be unable to completely own any single opponent, but he is still a strong force in the contest.

Maybe a better comparison would be Mario. He gets anti-voted (or so it seems, at least) to the point where he can almost never blowout non-Nintendo fodder, he allows mid-carders to get closer to him than they have any right to, and yet when the chips are down, you can still count on him to show that he's a force to be reckoned with.

So help me God if Vercetti wins tomorrow. GTA already pissed me off when CJ lost to Ness. Now when I pick a GTA character to lose, he seems to be the favorite. Well, CJ was overestimated, so Vercetti better have been, too.

I'm really interested to see the stats on how many brackets get the winner right tomorrow. On the board, especially in the Guru contest, the majority have Vercetti. But overall, the majority most likely has Kefka, so we'll see how that turns out. If that's the case though, GO BRACKET VOTERS!!

someone gets eliminated when someone with a higher score has all of the same picks for the rest of the bracket. as whomever they eliminated.

More generally, you get eliminated by someone when no matter who wins each of the rest of the matches, you will lose to them every time. In most cases, this happens when you have the same bracket but you have fewer points, but it can sometimes happen when you differ on a match but you're two points behind, or if your only difference is picking someone to win two matches but they already lost their first match, meaning you will alter lose 2 (or more) points, etc.

I can't help but agree. All people saw in Kerrigan was "OMG STARCRAFT = MASS CARRIERS = INSTANT WIN". Vincent had FF7. Now THAT'S an instant win. 79%? I'm not sure if that's how it's supposed to be, but at least 50.01%. :-)

I don't blame anyone for their Kerrigan pick after what a freaking glove did to Kuja.. Kuja cost me my perfect bracket.. After all of what Blizzard did, it's kind of scary and since Vincent is also a newb in the contest.. It could have gone either way..

First of all, Ceej didn't imply that SC cheated in more than one match. He mentioned that there was a lot of voting from China for Tommy Vercetti, and for whatever reason, Ulti decided that Ceej sounded "defeated" when he said that. In reality, Ceej said that one person COULDN'T have voted from all those IPs.

As for the statement that "anyone" who thought logically would reach the same conclusion as you, no... Anyone who applied your logic maybe, but there were other pieces of information that could have just as easily made this a real nailbiter. As it is, we still don't know Vincent's real strength, so we still can't even be sure about anything.

When SC was brought up, by Ceej, after the Kefka thing he said matches. That implies, even if unintentionally, that SC was cheated for more than once. Chances are, after the fact he looked back and saw the same proxies doing less obvious things in favor of SC (less obvious because the cheater had less ground to take back, of course).

I only believe in one set of absolute logic, everything else is a fallacy. Whatever led a person to pick Kerrigan over Vincent of all characters was a fallacy. "Vincent is weak because he's optional" = Fallacy. "Kerrigan will do as well as Diablo because they're both Blizzard" = Fallacy. "Starcraft did well so by extention Kerrigan must do well" = Fallacy. Just because you looked for reasons to override the logical conclusion doesn't mean you were thinking logically.

Except that it's about 4 times as much as Kerrigan's, or in other words no where near enough to think logic was used to select Kerrigan as the winner.

Sorry, I hope you know I've got nothing against you, but the choice was bad from the get-go and had no reason to be supported at all. It wasn't a good upset pick, and when the bracket came up I was sure no one would make it outside of favorites brackets, it was that bad. Anyone who seriously thought Kerrigan was going to win was just plain wrong.

This is old, but I want to respond to it.

When SC was brought up, by Ceej, after the Kefka thing he said matches. That implies, even if unintentionally, that SC was cheated for more than once.

You (and several others) have misinterpretted what Ceej said. When he said Vercetti's votes from China looked like the votes from Korea during Starcraft's matches, he was not talking about the cheat votes in SC/SSBM. He was talking about Starcraft's normal votes from Korea in every match.

Think about what he was saying - the point of his post was that he didn't think the surge for Vercetti was cheating. It would make no sense whatsoever for him to say "This isn't cheating because it looks like a previous time when there was cheating." It DOES make sense for him to say "This isn't cheating because it looks like a previous legitimate vote pattern we've seen", specifically Starcraft getting 65% of the votes from Korea. His post had nothing to do with Starcraft cheating, it only had to do with it getting a high percentage of the vote in Korea, which we already knew and expected.
