It seems strange to have to say this, as if it's a bad thing, but... Stats moves too fast. In the past I've tried to keep all Guru-related discussion within that single topic, but with it being filled all the way to 500 within a matter of just 72ish hours these days, I think we can spare a few posts for here.

So from now on, anytime you'd like to check the current standings in the Guru Prediction Contest, just head over to this topic and scroll down to latest posting. OR, you could just take the link that will from now on be found in my signature. That will take you to the Excel spreadsheet I use to track Guru stats and keep the standings up to date. If I were you, that'd probably be where I'd want to head first, as it also contains a ton of additional, pretty interesting information, plus it allows you to easily track anyone else's bracket.

I've got some stats to go over, but first... check the current rankings! (I've already given Tommy the credit for the win today. No big deal, as no one picked Max anyways.)

Both this topic and the Excel file will be updated every night that one of the Gurus predicts a match incorrectly, thus affecting the standings. And now... stats!

The biggest change from this Spring to now, stats-wise, is the sudden difference in opinion between the Board and the Experts (aka us). During the Great Game Contest, there was not a single disagreement between the two groups, in regards to who the winner of a match would be. This time around, we turned the table on the Board Odds not once, but three times. Best yet, one of those heavily contested matches just happens to be the Championship! Check this out:

On average, there were 4.09 differences from consensus per bracket.

This is me trying to win with risky picks, ie, I know Crash will lose to Chief, but it's worth it to take the risk as I think Crash just lost to a hot character last year *KOS-MOS, possessing the cult following (Xenogears/saga), Square voters (while Xenosaga wasn't square, XG was and voters/players would carry over), a new game coming out, plus the all important Jug factor*. Plus there's my whole Ryu Hayabusa in the Final Four belief, which is what I'm counting on in order to win, as well as Sephiroth's time to shine.

dd: Whoops, so you did. My goodness, I was a little off my game while entering these, it would appear. Still, a few mistakes here and there is to be expected, I suppose, when you're typing in 66 x 63 = um... 4,158 picks.

Whoa, good thing I waited on that Frog result! Man, never thought it'd end up being such a great match... the closest of the year, wire to wire, I believe. Stats up, and I'm happy to say we've set a new record! Yes, we welcome out 4th Guru to the Top 50, in charmander. He was able to sneak in thanks to nearly 25% of brackets siding with Crash in yesterday's match, for some odd reason.

For today we have 61 picks for Knux and only 5 for Kefka... but those 5 are looking pretty good right now, thanks to LC's incredible start. We'll see how long it can last, but in any case, I'm holding off on the Guru update for a while yet.

Everyone was in agreement that Snake and Cloud would be taking these matches the last two days (I should certainly hope so...), and so there have been no changes to the Standings.

What DID get a huge shakeup, however, were the standings site-wide, as Knux taking down Kef was the largest overall upset of the tourney so far. That cleared all kinds of room for new Top 50 members, and it was great to see yet another Guru taking full advantage. DomaDragoon added his name to the Big Board, setting a new standard for most Gurus represented at one time. We are now represented a full 4 times... and since there's room for 32 more of us, I'm expecting to see that number head way skyward, should Vyse pull it off for us tomorrow.

Kind of a neat fact... with our high number of flawless brackets, our modest little Stats Topic group now makes up 4.5% of the remaining Perfect Brackets, worldwide. Should be fun to watch that number climb as we move through this division.

Funny you should say that. Team Rocket Elite, Nifboy, Ringworm, DomaDragoon and charmander6000 all have Laharl winning that match. Those names sound familiar? Those are the five gurus on the top 50. If Vyse does win, all of them will fall. It is kinda interesting, there were only 7 gurus who choose Laharl. Only 5 are still perfect and all 5 are on the top 50.

That Vyse win hurt us less than it did the non-Guru Perfects, as with 31 out of the 640 remaining flawless brackets, we've risen to representing 4.84% of them. However, as TRE brought up a few posts back, this result just KILLED us in terms of the Top 50. All 5 Gurus who were there picked wrongly, and to make matters worse, not a single new Guru moved up to replace them! Looking bad right now, true, but on the bright side we're sure to see many of those remaining 31 start popping up over the course of the next few days. If Ness is able to take down Jak, I imagine the Big Board will suddenly be swimming in Gurus once again.

Hey, I'm just happy I made the top 50. Did happen in 2K3, but don't think I made it during spring.

I KNEW Laharl was a mistake, but I decided this year not to change my bracket. If I had of checked it before the entries closed, I probably would've changed it. Oh well, after Jak beats Ness, I'll be happy :)

And with Squall currently going to town on Bomberman, I'm just going to award us all the next point early. Kirby's win yesterday was also the unanimous choice but, strangely enough, a decent amount of the non-Guru perfects had trouble calling it. That increased our % of Perfection up to a nice 5.21%.

Regardless of what happens tomorrow, things are going to be shaken way up. Should Ness walk out a winner, 19 of the 31 Perfect Gurus will go home happy. But if Jak takes him out, that still leaves 12 of us looking flawless. An excellent split, and I'm fully expecting to see a few Gurus up into the Top 50 regardless of the outcome.

Blitz/anyone else: The whole point of the Gurus is that we are the "experts," that is, the people who post in-depth discussion about all things Contest both in and out of season in the Stats topic. It's not a closed list, however, and anyone can join if they'd like to... as long as they do it in the stats topic, before the brackets lock down. I'm glad you want to get involved, now that you've seen how things are run. We look forward to competing with you this Spring.

Oh, look at that, a shakeup indeed. Only 54.16% knew Ness was going to beat Jak yesterday, lowering the number of Perfects dramatically, to just 313. Of course, we lost 12 Perfects ourselves... but in the end we still made out better than the non-expert perfects, as we raised the Guru Representation percentage to a solid 6.07%.

This opened up some room in the Top 50 as well, and I'm happy to report that at least one Guru managed to take advantage. Congrats to Mac Arrowny, our new, lone representative on the Big Board.

And now, looking ahead to tomorrow's huge Vivi/DK showdown. There are 19 perfects remaining, remember, and...

If Vivi wins, 13 will survive.

If DK wins, 6 will survive. Those 6 risk-takers are Tai, Ulti, Krusty, Haste, FastFalcon, and Hogasm.

Will feel strange having to root against Nintendo, for my bracket's sake. The Squareheads had better not let me down on this one, or else.

I think Board 8 regulars are mainly the ones that spend a good amount of time nit-picking and changing things up (guilty as charged right here). Most others just fill the bracket out and leave it alone.

Vivi has just pushed his % up near the 56 mark, but it's still early, and so it remains to be seen if he is just a stronger version of Kefka. I don't think so, myself, but I DO think that Vivi had better be dang sure to keep extending that lead if he wants to survive the Day Vote.

Well, only 70.14% knew Auron would demolish Scorpion like he did yesterday. 37 of those confused by the result had formerly been perfect, which boosted the Gurus making up the Top 50 Percentage to 6.88%. All of those mistakes cleared the way for some new names atop the Big Board, and I was very excited to see that not one but two Gurus made the most of the opportunity. Congrats to Smurf and FastFalcon, who join Mac in bolstering our Guru representation back up to a healthy 3.

Unfortunately, not all of them will last the day, as Falc picked DK in this match. Still, I feel certain that the 13 Gurus still flawless (all assuming a Vivi win here) will go on to make a good showing of things up atop the big listing.

After a slow, anti-FF7 start, Seph is right back on track and well over the 80% mark. No surprise there, as we all agreed he would take this. The real news of the day is the shocking number just put up by Donkey Kong. But not in final percent... I'm talking prediction percentage. Only 35.13% thought he would lose to Vivi! The Perfects weren't much smarter, as their number nosedived from 276 all the way to 127.

About the only group to call this one were us Gurus, and it showed, as our % of Perfect Population took a huge jump to 10.24%! There was all kinds of turnaround on the Top 50 as well, where about half of the old listing dropped off. That made room for two new Gurus to take the stand, namely Steinershocker and red sox. This raises our representation to 4, one off the record. But you know what they say: records were made to be broken. And with 9 more Gurus waiting in the wings with perfect brackets, things are looking mighty good for that record to be shattered.

Wow, only 34%, that's pretty low. But I would have hoped I could reach a top 50 spot after that. Now I have to hope many perfects went with the higher seed of Kos-mos. If not I may never see the top 50 because I have tails and the guru's have VJ, and have never been on the wrong side so far.

Neither of those two matches are all that much in doubt, from a Guru perspective. In addition, we're considerably more confident in our picks of Joe and Ryu than the Board. Here's the stats.

Tails 17 25.76%

A 4.49% confidence boost from the 69.75% the Board picked him with.

Ryu (NG) 62 93.94%
Jill 4 6.06%

A huge 7.27% confidence boost from the 86.67% the Board was thinking.

Within the Perfects, there are a surprising 5 picks for Tails. Those daredevils are Mac, MasterMage, Smurf, red sox, and ps2. Given the near 3/4 margin Joe was taken with overall, I have to admit that it's a bit unnerving to see him only a 8-5 underdog in Perfect Land... But I don't doubt that in the end, the Guru majority will see me through yet again.

The only Perfect Jill supporter is red sox. So, should Tails come through for him, he would stand alone atop the mountain should yet another surprising upset occur.

It stands to be noted that though only 4 think Jill can pull the 14/3 upset, all 4 of those folks think she'll win right on through, taking down Sora or HK in Round Two.

And Sonic is well on his way to winning this one in a laugher. But, as would be expected, we all thought this would happen in this 1/16 matchup, and so nothing changes. Of note is the fact that for the first time we lost not a single Perfect yesterday, with all 127 taking Seph over whatever that thing was. So, no changes to our Perfection % or anything. Ah well... A stunning 9.91% confidence increase from the Board, who gave KOS at least a tiny shred of hope, at 88.57%.

Wow, great start to the Joe/Tails match. We'll see how this ends up playing out.

In the meantime, the Perfects took a pretty decent hit over KOS-MOS, dropping to just 106. But none of the top Gurus were fooled, and so our percent rises yet again, to 12.26%.

Well, either 8 or 5 will remain 23.5 hours from now. Which will it be? Stay tuned.

Hey, I'm proud to be the only one that picked KOS-MOS. Would of been good if an upset happened :)

It was a mistake to be honest. I realised when I checked my bracket it wasn't what I meant to choose. I was sure I had Ryu, but oh well. Not like I'll be winning anyway. That's what happens when you decide not to change your bracket - you make mistakes. I decided to keep it as I knew it was only worth 1 point.

Least I got Tails right, so I'll catch up a bit to most people. Having Tails beat Dante too might be pushing my luck a bit though. We'll see.

On a brighter note, we're sure to have all of those 5 in the Top 50. And, if my prediction is correct, we're even going to see some non-Perfects at the bottom of the Big Board by the time this is over. Meaning, look out for the return of old favorites, like Doma. Congrats to MasterMage and ps2, who surge into the Top 50 on the strength of the Tails win, taking our Guru representation count up to 5. Even though that ties our highest number ever, things didn't improve all that much in terms of % of Perfects being Gurus, as it rose only the slightest bit to 12.50%.

And wow, is Dante ever pounding him right now. But will we see another Ratchet Rebound this year, as was pulled off against Luigi? Let's wait and see.

tomorrow's pick: Sora

...Damn. Looks like my perfect disappears. Oh well, I've been nervous about this match for the entire contest, and Sora over HK is the one change that I would've made. If Yoshi takes it over Luigi I can get back on the leaderboard, and hopefully no perfects have the same bracket as me from here on out...although, mine is pretty cookie-cutter. It'll be extremely depressing to see the prediction percentage over 80 on this match. Do you think it'll make 90%?

85% were smart enough to take Dante yesterday, but surprisingly enough one of those to go against it was a former perfect. That raises us to 5/39, or 12.82%. And for today, Sora has this thing way, way in the bag already. The Gurus were expecting this overall, BUT, 5 folks did give their backing to HK... including former Perfect, Mac Arrowny! Speaking of which, ARG! Ryu was just about to make a whole lot of Gurus happy, as he had opened up an unbeatable 700+ lead with 4.5 hours to go, but now CJay has decided to re-do the poll because of a glitch. And, by the closest margin in Contest history, Ryu makes a whole lot of Gurus very happy! Yes, those 5 are indeed hurt, but the other 61 of us are loving this. Well, Gordon's making a good show of it today, but is going to end up losing once again. Surprisingly enough, there WERE a few Gurus to pick him, so things are going to be shaken up on the standings more than you might expect.

Meaning, we actually gave Gordon a better chance at winning than Jill. Um... GFNW, boys? That's pretty strange. Oh well, less than half of the people saw this coming, which is good... but the bad news is, only half of our own Perfects were right on this one, as well. Dang. That severely hurts our %s, as we're down to 2/66 Perfects (3.03%), and 2/25 Perfects left anywhere (8.00%). From 5 just a few days back we've dropped to our lowest Top 50 representation in a long while, with just those same two getting their names up.

But it's not all gloom and doom, as today's result is sure to give at least 30 non-Perfects room on the Big Board. And as that number grows, we should be there to take advantage of it: there's a full 15 Gurus just a step away from Perfect. But, lets get on with it, shall we?

How embarrassing... The Perfects were not only beaten, but beaten soundly... by Gordon Freeman? 65% knew GFNW, yet only 60% of those who made no mistakes to this point were able to see it coming. Sad.

But hey, both of our flawless Gurus survived, so we'll take that anyday. This marks a new high water point for our Guru's making up Perfects percentage, at 13.33%. Also, we get to welcome back a former Top 50er in Mac Arrowny, taking us back up to 3. Good deal.

Chichiri and Ulti have the same bracket, sans one difference: Vivi vs. DK. Chichiri won that, so he doesn't have a chance at beating her for the Guru challenge.

Although I am confused about one thing:

I thought that Chichiri had Sephiroth winning in her bracket, and Crono beating Link. And I thought Ulti had Cloud winning in his bracket and Link beating Crono.

Am I mistaken? Did they give different brackets for the Guru challenge than their actual brackets? Or are they referring to alts of theirs? Sorry, I've been wondering about that myself >_<.

There seems to be a great deal of confusion centered around me.

When speaking of my choices of Crono over Link and Seph to win it all I speak of another bracket. I have a friend who is clueless about the contest, so I helped him out to make a 'game theory' bracket that is a very long shot statistically yet still within the realm of possiblity. Unlike my bracket I actually like that bracket. I only have this one to win, and as you can see I stumbled upon every safe choice.

And yes, I have soundly defeated Ulti and many others sending them to contest hell, as it were, along with Ngamer and a couple of other gurus.

Oh, and as fun as it would be to let the confusion cause trouble across the board in the not so distant future, I'm a guy. The Seifer/Zell yaoi was one of my ex-girlfriends favorites and I read it to appease her. It was well written smut, but not exactly a turn on to me. Now Vincent/Sephiroth... Anywya, I'm a guy. I got my name from a character in Fushigi Yuugi who is male. It looks similar to a female name but isn't. No confusion here people, I'm actually a guy.

Hey NGamer, when you did that mathematically eliminated thing, did you include points we've missed in later rounds as well? If you did, I'd be fascinated to know what possible chain of events could lead to my bracket winning or tying for the lead.

I just don't understand how your two mis-typings could occur when entering predictions for the two most controversial matches of the entire first round... in other words, the matchups you ought to have double checked. Oh my, is that ever sad... a former Perfect picked Ganon. This raises our Percent of Perfects to a record high of 14.29%. We all said Link, so no other changes.

Looks like Yoshi has this one pretty well in hand, having gotten out to a 58% start. But I'll wait until the Day Vote starts rolling in before running the next update. (In other words, I'm too tired.)

No, Chocokid, I never mentioned anything about a screencap in regards to you. All I told you was, don't bother typing in your bracket, because it's incredibly, hugely too late to get involved for this season. In order to join, you would have to had signed up, in the Stats topic, over a month ago. You would then have had to post your bracket in the bracket topic within 3 days when they locked down. No one was added if they were a day late, let alone well over a month.

A complicated process? Yes. But 66 others had enough incentive to go through with it. That's what makes them Gurus.

Wow, what a great day to be a Guru! The rest of the world picked just horribly yesterday, with under 44% knowing Yoshi would win. The Perfects were a little smarter, but certainly didn't approach our 80%. ps2 and Mmage weren't fooled, moving our % of Perfects all the way up to 22.22%. In addition, we smashed the old record for most Gurus on the Top 50 at once, with 6 currently! Welcome back to red sox and Sshock.

Even better, though... A mere 130 users are left with bracket within a point of perfection. A whole 15 of them are Gurus! With some very easy to guess matches coming in the next week or so, it looks like we're going to have a great shot at 10 Gurus on the Big Board. Huzzah! In other news, Magus is dead in the water. A fairly respectable 78% went with Crono to win it yesterday. The only big news was that a former perfect was fooled into backing Magus, and so our % of Perfects being Gurus shot up to a new record high of 25.00%. I've just scanned my entire bracket and the Full Bracket. If Ryu Hayabusa wins against Sora I'll make it to Round 3 with only 1 point lost. (Tails over V. Joe)

Crono over Mario, Cloud over Sephiroth, and Link over Cloud (Picks that I'm happy with right now) are the toss-ups after that. All in all, I'm very content.

I'm just worried one of the remaining 7 perfects has the same bracket as I. If they're all gone, I'll consider dreaming about victory.

What was that, cyko? Something about a bunch of geniuses? Why, thank you! In quite possibly the greatest match in history, Frog advances by the smallest margin of all time. For all the excitement, though, it didn't shake things up here in Guru land all THAT crazily. The biggest news is that we did lose one of our Perfects, meaning only 1/66 remains (1.52%). 2 outside perfects fell as well, and so our % of Perfects wasn't killed so so bad, just dropped back to 20.00% (1/5). Press the Print Screen button on your keyboard, and then go into Paint and select Paste. Save the file, then upload it or send it to Ngamer. Simple as that.

Hmmm, it seems inevitable that the top bracket will have a better score this year than last year. There are plenty of high-scoring gurus that have all the variations of the potentially close battles, so we might even be guaranteed a 190+ bracket. It would be an interesting thing to check.

Only 70% or so got this one right... and yet only one of the 56 near-flawless brackets (0 or 1 off) were fooled. Dang it, people just won't think differently anymore. A bit of a shakeup today though, as 7 Gurus picked against Dante. The bad news is, 5 of those picks were for V Joe... And things are looking pretty grim for the 2 Tails backers at the moment as well, with Dante sitting pretty above the 60% mark. We'll see how much the Day Vote is able to swing this thing back... though I don't see how it could be enough.

The good news (at least for me) is that all three of our 60 pointers have Link picked as Champion, meaning me and my two cookie cutting friends are still looking great for the Guru win. The bad news is, it doesn't look like a Guru will be taking home the overall Championship this time... I think our only hope is that all three of the Cloud pickers at 61 have Mario picked as well, which would let ps2 sneak by for the Championship. But I don't see that as very likely. Also, we've fallen to having only 3 representatives in the Top 50 right now.

Pretty major changes sitewide as well, with only 38% backing Crono. 10 ahead of me fell, moving us -3s up to 32nd place. Over ten new spots were cleared on the Big Board, but no Gurus filled them in... with 9 of us still within 3 pts of perfect though, should have a decent shot at breaking the record of 5 before things are all said and done.

Yeah, so it does ps2, but unless Mega Man comes through for HM (heh), alot of people are going to have to deal with the heartbreak this year. But that's some very good news from Mmage. If he's right, and CJay uses the same system for ranking the Top 50 again this year (I don't see why he wouldn't), then whichever Guru is ranked highest there will be our official champ and go into the 66 sigs. Heh, the funny thing about this contest, is you can know exactly what you are doing, be perfect up until Cloud/Link, miss that match, one match in the entire tournament, but since most of these matches are such gimmies, you won't even finish in the top 10% of entries. Take March Madness, and if you only miss 32 points, chances are you could be walking home with some serious money.

Speaking of putting things here to have copies of them, here's my outlook on tomorrow, from the Oracle topic.


Talk about your sticky situations. Same match last year finished as a 51.61% victory for Cloud. Now people are saying that he can't do it again, because he's only putting up 59% on Samus, whereas Link got 62% on her last year. But the question I'd have to ask would be, how much SFF was there in that match? After seeing what Zelda games did to Metroid games this Spring, is 3% really that unthinkable? Going along with that line of thought, maybe Prime really DID give Samus a major boost already last year. As I recall, heading into the Link match it certainly looked like it, given the way she destroyed the same Squall who had just upset Luigi in a big way.

Ok, so at this point I think I could still justify sticking with my bracket and taking Cloud. But then, I still have to take into account Link's apparent gain over the past year. He should have gotten 61.40% on Mega. Instead he got 67.61%. Where did the 6.21% come from? Alot of people are saying the idea of Link SFFing Mega is ridiculous... But think about this: Mega's strength has always been based off losses to Square (namely, Seph). Only one time have we been given a glimpse into what would happen if MM faced an at least somewhat decent Nintendo character, one whose fanbase likewise overlapped all through the NES and SNES eras. Interestingly enough, that one instance is also [i]the only time Mega Man has shown a weakness[/i], when he failed to break 61% on Zelda. Looking at it that way, we shouldn't have been so shocked to see Link, from the identical fanbase, look better than most thought possible last round.

And the 62.82 on Crono? Same thing. I get the feeling that Crono was likewise held back this year, as he has been every year, by having his strength determined through losses to Nintendo's top two (or is it now two of its top three?). Were he to draw Cloud or Seph, I bet his strength could end up much closer to the 58%-vs-eventual-champ that his game put up against FF7. He just owes too much of his popularity to an SNES era during which much of his fanbase preferred the sales monster that was LttP.

Alright... have I convinced myself yet? Hm... not quite. Let's look at what else Link has done. Assuming we throw out MM and Crono due to some SFF... and of COURSE we've got to toss Yoshi and Ganon, that's just obvious SFF. Leaving us with, let's see here... CATS. Ok, Link put up 87.83% there. Cloud '03 did, um... 86.91%. Aw, CRAP! There's no way I can justify SFF in that one. All that rationalizing, just to be done in by CATS. But that's ok... although I can't convince myself that Cloud will come out ahead, I DO know that's it going to be a much more narrow victory than most are giving it credit for.

And so, in the end I'm going to say:

Link with 50.07%

I really wish I'd gone back over my bracket. Made some stupid mistakes, such as Vercetti over Zero without even realising it. There were other matches such as Laharl v Vyse where I knew I'd made mistakes too. I'll only drop 10 points overall if Link wins though, which is pretty good.

As for the sigs, the way I see it, we have two options before us. When the final rankings are revealed, including tiebreakers, we will know for certain who came out on top, and should all be sure to name that person. But until that time, if you have room for only one user in your sig, make it nifboy. He followed along carefully enough to include his tiebreaker when originally asked, and should be rewarded for it. The other option, and this is the one I'm taking, is to mention all three as co-champions. It's up to you, but I've decided to keep my sig like this for the remainder of the offseason.

Congrats to our Champs, and congrats to Link. Long live Nintendo! (why oh why did I pick against it?)

Heh, turns out my tiebreaker wasn't so bad after all. I just wish I'd had Crono over Mario, that would have put me in the top 50, which would have been very cool indeed.
