* The Contest Guru Scoreboard *

It seems strange to have to say this, as if it's a bad thing, but... Stats moves too fast. In the past I've tried to keep all Guru-related discussion within that single topic, but with it being filled all the way to 500 within a matter of just 72ish hours these days, I think we can spare a few posts for here.
So from now on, anytime you'd like to check the current standings in the Guru Prediction Contest, just head over to this topic and scroll down to latest posting. OR, you could just take the link that will from now on be found in my signature. That will take you to the Excel spreadsheet I use to track Guru stats and keep the standings up to date. If I were you, that'd probably be where I'd want to head first, as it also contains a ton of additional, pretty interesting information, plus it allows you to easily track anyone else's bracket.
I've got some stats to go over, but first... check the current rankings! (I've already given Tommy the credit for the win today. No big deal, as no one picked Max anyways.)

Both this topic and the Excel file will be updated every night that one of the Gurus predicts a match incorrectly, thus affecting the standings. And now... stats!
The biggest change from this Spring to now, stats-wise, is the sudden difference in opinion between the Board and the Experts (aka us). During the Great Game Contest, there was not a single disagreement between the two groups, in regards to who the winner of a match would be. This time around, we turned the table on the Board Odds not once, but three times. Best yet, one of those heavily contested matches just happens to be the Championship! Check this out:
Round One, Tidus v Shadow:
Gurus - 64.52% say Tidus
Board - 49.58% say Tidus
a 14.94% swing
Round One, Ness v Jak:
Gurus - 56.45% say Ness
Board - 48.74% say Ness
a 7.71% swing
The Championship, Link v Cloud:
Gurus - 45.45% say Cloud
Board - 39.83% say Cloud
a 5.62% swing.
(Link falls -4.01%; Seph rises 1.28%)
One down, two to go. Because of those three changes, the Guru Consensus Bracket looks like this.
The Guru Bracket
Round One: Link, Ganon, Yoshi, Luigi, Magus, Crono, Bowser, Mario |
Mega, Tidus, Tommy, Zero, Frog, M. Chief, Knux, Snake |
Cloud, Vyse, Kirby, Squall, Ness, Auron, Vivi, Seph |
Sonic, Ryu, Joe, Dante, Sora, Ryu, Sam, Samus
Round Two: Link, Yoshi, Crono, Mario | Mega, Zero, Frog, Snake |
Cloud, Squall, Auron, Seph | Sonic, Dante, Ryu, Samus
Elite Eight: Link, Crono, Mega, Snake, Cloud, Seph, Sonic, Samus
Final Four: Link, Mega, Cloud, Samus
Final: Link, Cloud
Champ: Cloud
Which, interestingly enough, is my own bracket, exactly. Unfortunately, the same could be said for three other people... me, ChichiriMuyo, BeTheMan, and Fantusta all tie for the Cookie Cutter Award, having not made a single risky pick. (Better have a good tiebreaker, guys!) The Originality Award, on the other hand, goes to Tarrot, who went against common opinion a full 12 times. On average, there were 4.09 differences from consensus per bracket.

Out of curiosity, does anyone else have the exact same bracket as you guys, but with DK beating Vivi?

Well, i was just looking over my bracket on your site, and for some reason I had Kefka winning....
I double checked my Actual bracket, and i DO have knuckles winning that, so i probably just entered it wrong. Would you be able to change it?
Course, i still don't know why i picked Gordon to win a match....God help.

Hah! See. These first round matches can make a difference.
Note: This comment is not to be directed at Ulti, but just to people in general who say that first round matches don't matter.

That's okay, I'm not nearly surprised that it's that few. I picked SSBM over FFX in the Spring and it paid off (too bad I blew it on other matches). Have to go against the grain somewhere, or else there'll be 10 people with the same winning bracket and I suck at predicting tiebreakers.

Mac: Yes, you did have Link down as your winner in the topic... sorry, I must have entered that wrong, but it's been changed now. Good catch!
Speaking of different champs, there was a slight mix-up regarding ChibiKuririn's pick to win it all. I fixed it, and now, believe it or not... the Gurus are at a dead heat for Champ predictions!
Cloud - 29 picks
Link - 29 picks
Just when you thought that match couldn't get any better...
anda: I double checked what you entered in the topic, and you did have Kefka down there. In cases like this, I'm going to ask that you post a screen capture of your official bracket. Once I see that, and that you have Knux chosen, I'll make the edit.
If anyone else spots any problems with their bracket as entered, now's the time to let me know about it!

Ngamer64, I noticed a problem with my entry. You say that I have Joe over Tails, when in reality my bracket has it the other way around (as seen in the other Guru topic). Please change to Tails as soon as it's convenient for you.

The Originality Award, on the other hand, goes to Tarrot, who went against common opinion a full 12 times.
This is me trying to win with risky picks, ie, I know Crash will lose to Chief, but it's worth it to take the risk as I think Crash just lost to a hot character last year *KOS-MOS, possessing the cult following (Xenogears/saga), Square voters (while Xenosaga wasn't square, XG was and voters/players would carry over), a new game coming out, plus the all important Jug factor*. Plus there's my whole Ryu Hayabusa in the Final Four belief, which is what I'm counting on in order to win, as well as Sephiroth's time to shine.

dd: Whoops, so you did. My goodness, I was a little off my game while entering these, it would appear. Still, a few mistakes here and there is to be expected, I suppose, when you're typing in 66 x 63 = um... 4,158 picks.

Go to bracket. Hit Print Screen on your keyboard. Open Paint. Paste. Save as jpg. Then email me at ngamer@gmail.com, attaching that jpg file.

Well, assuming the no risk bracket takes the day then my tie breaker will likely put me into 2nd unless voter attendance increases. Second twice in a row, though... that hurts.

Alright, made the change, andaca. Everyone picked both Tommy and Zero, so no changes to the leaderboard just yet. However, we did have three daring picks for Lsnake in today's match, by Wiggum, Rufus, and Darunia. Normally I'd award the points already by this point, but it looks like Frog could still potentially drop the ball on this one, so we'll just have to wait and see what the Day Vote brings about.

Whoa, good thing I waited on that Frog result! Man, never thought it'd end up being such a great match... the closest of the year, wire to wire, I believe. The Gurus as a whole sure lucked out on that one. All except those three Lsnake backers, that is. Well, they have some company, as two people, for some crazy reason, went with Crash in today's match. With MC well over the 70% mark in the early going, I'm just going to reward the rest of us with an early victory for today.

Yeah, even though 5 messed up these last two days, they were all people in the minority, having already made a mistake before, and so we lose no perfects.
I can't wait for this next stats update... The way Lake performed, you've got to be thinking he was at least close to being the overall bracket favorite in that match. Which is a good thing for us, as there's currently 36 spots on the Top 50 still waiting to be filled with perfect Gurus.

I was more than right! Only 44.33% were smart enough to make Frog their pick yesterday. And, thanks to that low turnout, we welcome our third Guru into the Top 50! Congrats to Ringworm, who joins TRE and nifboy. This ties last Spring's record for most Gurus on the Big Board at once, as there was a time when Ulti, Bananaquest, and myself all could be seen up there, representing to the fullest. And that's what it's all about... Guru pride.

Stats up, and I'm happy to say we've set a new record! Yes, we welcome out 4th Guru to the Top 50, in charmander. He was able to sneak in thanks to nearly 25% of brackets siding with Crash in yesterday's match, for some odd reason.
For today we have 61 picks for Knux and only 5 for Kefka... but those 5 are looking pretty good right now, thanks to LC's incredible start. We'll see how long it can last, but in any case, I'm holding off on the Guru update for a while yet.

My goodness! This is one of the most impressive Day Vote turnarounds I have ever seen. With Knux looking like he's heading well into 57% territory now, I think it's safe to say that I can update the Rankings without risk. 5 more take a tumble, but luckily for us, only 2 of those had been in the perfect majority beforehand.
