I'm expecting this to be a fantastic matchup... but unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to stay up to get the updates off to a good start tonight. But, given how exciting this ought to be, I'm hoping that someone is going to be willing to step up to the plate and take care of business, at least until our old pal Chucat wakes up. Remember, it's not hard to do... just follow these links.

Something to keep in mind during these early updates: Pokemon may not profit from the "day vote" as much as you might expect, due to the fact that Xenogears was never released in Europe. This means that even if Pokemon gets out to a decent lead in the early hours, there's still a very good possibility for a Mario RPG-ish comeback throughout the day.

I'm going to go with Central time here to make things easier for me. These numbers apply only to school days.

The Day Vote usually starts to kick in at around 7 in the morning, but things don't change much for a few hours yet. Then things stay consistent for a bit, before they start really picking up at 2 in the afternoon. This is the biggest part of the day, vote-wise, and also where the Day Vote comes most into play. This trend continues until about 6, then levels off again. The Night Vote comes into play once again at around 10 at night, goes somewhat strong for about 2 hours, then dies out after midnight.

Generally, the Night Vote is going to agree with the Overnight Vote (from 2 in the morning until about 6 AM), though there have been a few exceptions (most notably Duck Hunt).

Nice start by Xenogears. It might fall drastically in the next update, but I don't think it will, because its % stayed pretty constant for the first 15 minutes. It has to watch out for the daytime vote, but if it has 57% before the morning vote starts, it'll be in a very good position.

...and good lord, those sponsored polls are annoying.

Mainland 0 reborN, I know why you are confused. You notice that Xenogears lead in % is going down, while they are still pulling away in the vote category. If you do a little math it makes sense.

2 votes to 1 is a 66% lead
10 votes to 8 is a 55% lead Notice that in this one there is a gain of 1, but the % goes down.

It strikes me as somewhat odd what low a voting turnout there's been. Even the two polls that had to share the PotD with the GameRiot sponsored poll did far better then this...

Yeah, I'd imagine a lot of folks will see Pokemon and be like "Ew, that's for kids", then they'll look at Xenogears and be like "Whatever that is. Don't care". Then they proceed to whatever section of the site they came here for. :)

Crazy as sounds, although Xenogears has won every update, I'm not that worried yet. (I picked Pokemon)

I'm waiting for the morning vote. If it favors Pokemon, we have ourselves a battle. If not, it's Game Over.

In a way due to the low voter turnout at this point it might seem more likely that the morning/afternoon voters will have a larger say. However given that the vote thus far has been so low, I think this is a trend we'll likely see throwout the day.

At anyrate the most important number to look at is that votes needed per update for Pokemon to make a comeback. It's already at 4, which is significant this early especially with this low a turnout, if it's beyond say 40 by the morning, I don't think Pokemon will stand much of a chance.

My word, you're right...Suikoden had 1,280 at the 1:30 mark. That's priceless!

Weekdays have higher vote totals, but are more skewed towards towards daytime hours since people go to bed earlier; and there's also the poll factor. But even with those factors these vote totals are downright pathetic. Wonder if the final vote total will be able to match the totals of the other matches that were interfered with by sponsored polls.

By the way, including the most recent update there has been an average of 263.125 votes per update. At this rate there would be only 25,260 votes in the entire match. Ofcourse it will pick up in the morning, but still the numbers are extreamly low. Outside of the first update in the SF2 v SMRPG match the lowest vote total in any update was in the 400s. The 1:45-2:00am time block saw 599 votes in that contest, this one has about thress times less at roughly 200 votes in the same time period.

To win this, Pokemon will need to do roughly 55 votes (Just an estimate) better then its doing now during the day vote. It might seem high, but it needs to build up a lead of its own in case Xenogears comes back in the final hours.

By the way, including the most recent update there has been an average of 263.125 votes per update. At this rate there would be only 25,260 votes in the entire match. Ofcourse it will pick up in the morning, but still the numbers are extreamly low. Outside of the first update in the SF2 v SMRPG match the lowest vote total in any update was in the 400s. The 1:45-2:00am time block saw 599 votes in that contest, this one has about thress times less at roughly 200 votes in the same time period.

At any rate, this makes the match interesting. The conditions seem perfect for another nailbiter comeback. But if the morning vote doesn't favor Pokemon as strongly as is needed, we might be in for a big anti-climax.

Suikoden II is actually younger then FF7, so it's more likely to have a younger audience of fans based on that. Niether of the games where designed for little kids though and given their ages I doubt many people under 13 played either game and even that is likely somewhat conservative with FF7 being 7 years old now.

Well, if Xenogears loses I think I'll be sick. The problem is that stupid kids are intelligent enough to understand the hidden meanings behind Freud's Ego, SuperEgo and ID!!! Which plays a huge part in the game. The ID being the manifestation of peoples ultimate desires.
Xenogears was a pure masterpiece. And the fact that the 400th installment of pokemon is pulling ahead is just crazy...

I think that's your answer, then. The reason why Xenogears has stalled out this last hour or two is more likely blamed on Europeans, not kiddies.

Why? Think about it this: why would Square-Enix games do as well in the contest as it has if the primary voting population here at GameFAQs are young kids? Previous polls have shown that hardly any people that visit this site are under the age of twelve or thirteen. Even those that do generally tend to be aware of what does well at this site: Square-Enix RPGs. Given the fact that a vast population here has played every Square game in existence, one would imagine Xenogears winning by more than it is.

In the meantime, in Europe, it's past the early morning hours and getting close to noon, I think, if I've done my math right. So as the percentage of the voting populace slowly tilts against the American FAQers who have likely played Xenogears, it's not surprising that the votes have slightly changed, but still haven't accounted for a total boost in votes.

Seriously, if Pokemon was winning now because of a "kiddy" vote, it should be a lot more overwhelming than just one or three vote gains per minute.

True but that still doesn't sound good for Xenogears. Based on the strengths you listed in your post, shouldn't it be doing a whole lot better per update? Its gains aren't large and it seems to be leveling off to the point where both games are 50-50.

Also the kiddie vote is somewhat of a myth. While it's true that children do visit the site and do vote in the polls, previous GameFAQs polls on the subject suggest that the majority of the people fall into the 13-17 age bracket. If memory serves me the 18-21 was the next highest.

Technically anyone under the age of majority is a kid, but I guess my point is they're not little kids.

I said this in another topic, but I`ll say it again. Knuckles/Yuna was the exact same way last year. The lead for Knuckles remained still at 1000 for hours until the morning vote kicked in.

What the hell is going on? One moment they're equal, and then one of them gains a bunch. I blame the low turnout for giving us erratic results per update. A few votes are much more noticable with a lower turnout.

That's really strange indeed. Normally the nightly, European, Xenogears-was-never-released-here vote would have given Pokémon the lead, THEN Xenogears would have to do the catch-up job. As it is, the exact reverse is happening.

However, Pokémon will soon need to come back in terms of votes if it wants to stay in.

That was the first thing I said too. It seems the Cult-RPG night voters are beating out the European vote. I don't buy that stuff about school that much. Sounds too much like 'The kiddies are waking up'.

I do expect Pokemon to do a little better over the course of the day, though. Simply because its the more mainstream title.

Slowflake, will you make some sense out of these gains and drops for me?

I could throw my 2 cents into that if you want. The low vote totals pretty much mean that users with keen eyes and us hardcore contest fans will be the only ones voting in the poll. Furthermore, the poll started at 3AM on a school night, and the majority of us are in high school and need to wake up early.

It comes down to the fact that the North American vote is not in yet, while the mainstream European vote is keeping Pokemon close. The same thing happened with Street Fighter 2. It was close for awhile because of mainstream Europe vs Hardcore America, but once North America woke up, the Square title took the match. I suspect the same thing to happens here and for Xenogears to win by at least 5000 votes. Not much, but a win is a win.

There's very little of any vote going on. None of the factors offered have adquitely explained this turnout, except to say that perhaps the fact that Xenogears was never released in Europe, and Pokemon isn't well liked by the majority of older voters equals less votes overall.

At anyrate, I wouldn't garantee Xenogears the day vote. Though at this point, it's 8:45am EST so if your relying on a kid vote, already a large segement of the North American kids (and adults for that matter seeing as they work) are off for the day until the afternoon. That's never stopped the vote total from climbing before, which I'd suspect it will eventually do as more timezones awaken...

Essientally that CJayC improved upon poll security making it harder on ppl whom wish to cheat. I doubt this is the explination though seeing as I find it hard to believe that would account for such a large chunk of the poll's total.

So you basically he think he saw FF7's absolutely massive poll results, and thrust down the new security rules overnight? Meh, it's possible, but if he knew vote stuffing on such a massive level was going on, why wouldn't he create a topic about it and quite possibly even attempt to filter through previous results? The only thing any "change in security level" would do is make the results that much more unfeasible and skewed, since FF7 still has a recorded victory of its level.

XENOGEARS: ...what the hell? Aren't you supposed to get the kiddy vote?

POKEMON: ...nah. Haven't you noticed a trend with Final Fantasy VII's day performance and the performance of Super Mario RPG VS Street Fighter? If anything, the casual GameFAQs day visiter is even more of an RPG fan than the nighthawks!

Not so much RPG fans as the kind of RPG fans who don't play Nintendo RPGs. I noticed this when I made the "which of the following RPGs have you played" topic. Paper Mario and Pokemon both lost significant ground on this board during the day.

I suspect the new "kiddies" are those who remember playing a PS1 when they were seven....

To correct the loss of votes, why doesn't CJC just put an Update at the top of the page that quite clearly says "Due to our new advertisting polls, the Summer Contest tournament poll has been moved down a bit?" The other predictable downside is that the closer magnitude of "blowouts" in a match that garners less votes likely means that the 32/64 and 128 bit games that now lose in the first round have a better chance of being ranked above an 8 bit or 16 bit game. If a game only gets a few thousand votes, it's not nearly as damning as it would have been for, say, Adventure against LoZ. Because the margin of victory won't be as obscene.

Oh, and expect Vice City and other casual favorites to be creamed in that setup.

Yeah, something weird is going on with unregistered voters. When I woke up, I tried to vote using the computer in my room, which has nobody logged on, and it said that a vote for my IP address had already been recorded, even though that wasn't true. Later, I came down to my other computer where I keep myself logged in and had no problem voting. The two computers have the same IP address, they are on the same network.

If that is true, the major predictable downside is going to be overinflated results with 8 bit/16 bit/FF7 = basically meaning that in the rankings at the end of the contest (like Diamond Soul X's topic, or others analyses), it'll look like the 8/16/FF7 games had a massive first round in comparison to the remaining 32/64 and 128 bit games.

My rankings were based on percentages, so a low vote count would not effect them.

However, changes in votes due to registration requirments...

Don't know. The poll could still be tied to the one above it. I think someone suggested that as a possible problem.

It could also be that refresh problem some people have. You konw, similar to the Pikachu April fools bit and having old polls show up instead of new ones.

It probably just means the ASP script is still running happily, so even though you can't get to it from the home page, you can still technically vote. There are several reasons why people would be voting from places other than the home page - direct links from other sites, cached pages, and, potentially, if they were vote-stuffing somehow.

That's easy enough to explain. The % is based on the amount of votes per update. Since the total votes being cast per update is now pretty low, a 5 vote difference can affect the % much more drastically.

OMG! This is the craziest thing I've ever seen. You can bet I'm putting this entire topic over in Archives tonight! Man oh man...

And whoever was sorry for Chucat having done all these updates, don't be... This is a great opportunity for us, we're going to be able to tell EXACTLY how much the "casual vote" affects a match for once! This poll has given us a great idea as to where the board stands. To no one's surprise, they back Square. But it's very interesting, even then Xeno wasn't able to turn this into a blowout. So now we see, do the more casual visitors have what it takes to make up 5%?

This is a great opportunity for us, we're going to be able to tell EXACTLY how much the "casual vote" affects a match for once!

I wouldn't say "exactly" - we only got about 10 hours of restricted voting before the poll was taken from the home page, so it's hard to be sure how that missing 14 hours would affect the result. It will be interesting to see how the first 10 hours of both polls compare though, and we will be able to tell a lot from any discrepancies (or lack of discrepancies).

Yeah, maybe not exactly... remember, there are quite a number of registered Pokemon fans (just check one of the game boards), and I'm betting that alot of them are returning from school wanting to cast a vote right NOW. If Pokemon was going to make a comeback with the board members (and I have a feeling it would have), it would have happened between half an hour ago and 4 and a half hours from now.

I doubt that push would have been enough to overtake Xeno... but I bet it could have cut the margin to about 52/53%.

yeah if pokemon has a chance(which i thought it did before i looked at this topic) it will come after school, and it will come in swarms of pokemon fans on the bus ride home from school.Then once their mommies walk them inside and sign them on, the poll will definitely change alot.

Or it will be because lots of people realize the fact that Pokémon is much deeper than Xenogears where it matters: gameplay.

And whoever was sorry for Chucat having done all these updates, don't be... This is a great opportunity for us, we're going to be able to tell EXACTLY how much the "casual vote" affects a match for once! This poll has given us a great idea as to where the board stands. To no one's surprise, they back Square. But it's very interesting, even then Xeno wasn't able to turn this into a blowout. So now we see, do the more casual visitors have what it takes to make up 5%?

Wow... The best matchup of the first round just got even more interesting.

Oh wow. I never though of that. But I thought of this:

Yeah, it should be fun. I'm going to start off my new topic later on tonight by posting these complete stats, and then the updater will be able to compare the two throughout the first 10 hours of the matchup. Should give us a very good idea on not just casual voting trends in general, but how they apply across the timezones as well.

lol, look back to the earlier pages and you can see all the conspiracy theories as to the low vote turn-out, I thought it was fairly amusing hehe.

and, just to state the hopefully obvious, not all Pokemon fans are going to be kids, a great number are probably the regular age, and I really suspect overall the effect of the kiddie vote.

I still say Xenogears will win. There is nothing to lead me to believe that the percentages shown among our site`s voters will be any different than the overall percentages among non-site voters. They hold up well through most of these matches for a reason.

Actually, I think I'm going to start a new topic in about an hour for this rematch. Just starting over in this one would be far too confusing. Plus, I got to figure it would hit 500 before we got in a decent amount of updates.
