Yesterday was quite the day. After seeing the most incredible match of all time on Labor Day, as Chrono Trigger and Ocarina of Time ended up TIED(!) 134 to 134, we were forced to run two matches at the same time. Let's check how they turned out.

The tiebreaker between OoT and CT was very, very tight, as would be expected. Ocarina pulled out to the early lead, but Chrono soon made a comeback, pulling ahead by a couple votes. There were a few more lead changes, but neither game was ever winning by more than 5 votes... until the last 3 hours. It was then that CT made its move, and it was a big one, as it pulled out to a commanding lead that the Zelda game couldn't touch. CT won the tiebreaker, 127 to 112, which means that the final, complete score was an amazing

Chrono Trigger - 261
Ocarina of Time - 246

After a full 507 votes, it's a small 51.5% victory for the SNES classic.

But there was alot of excitement on the other side of the bracket as well, where many were hoping that Mario 3 could be the game to finally put an end to Animal Crossing's reign of terror. It started out pretty close, but soon turned into a near-blowout, by Final Four standards. The final score was:

Super Mario Bros 3 - 82
Animal Crossing - 53

AC doesn't just go down, it goes down HARD, to the tune of 60.7% for the NES masterpiece.

So we're all set for the championship! It should be a great battle... two #1 seeds, Square VS Nintendo, NES VS SNES, RPG VS platformer. But before we get started, let's take a look at the Path's to the Championship for both games.

- 16. Tetris Attack (31 - 12)
- 8. Super Mario Kart (81 - 76)
- 13. Perfect Dark (65 - 43)
- 2. Final Fantasy 6 (52 - 43)

Agh, so close...

I remember purchasing SMB 3 the *day* it came out. What a great game!

*But* -- Chrono Trigger was just phenomenal. What a story, what a cast, what a game.

Chrono Trigger deserves the win. Its biggest threat was OoT, a stupendous masterpiece; how can it lose now?

Two excellent games. Both definitely deserve to be here.

I like them both, though I like Chrono Trigger slightly more ... but I also feel gratitude toward SMB3 for finally knocking out the joke entry, which lasted four rounds longer than it should have. (Actually, five rounds longer.)

Then again, it was SMB3's fans who accomplished that goal, not the game itself. And if the fans continue their support, they can lead Mario's masterpiece to a win here too.

So I'll give my vote to Chrono Trigger. A victory for either of these great games would be fine with me, though. ^.^

And thank you Ngamer64 for conducting this tournament. ^.^

With this final score, we have a final Champion of the 2003 Great Game Contest. And it is...

1. Chrono Trigger - 110
1. Super Mario Bros 3 - 88

With nearly 200 votes cast, that is a 55.6% victory for CT. All hail the champ!

Chrono Trigger is a great, great game.

Kudos to OoT -- a masterpiece, and SMB3 -- a timeless classic.

But CT features a really memorable cast, witty dialogue, *many* possible sidequests, and marvelous character development. Not to mention the strong plot -- and never mind the good graphics and musical score, and replay value.

Congrats to the rightful champion.
