ScorecardHere's one more look at this year's roster--this time with labels that show how many rounds the returning cast managed to win last year. Contestants are organized by division, then seed. First with the new faces included for reference:
...and now without.
Taking 2002's results into account puts a pretty weird spin on 2003's seeding. Last year, Crono scored a surprising victory over Snake...and he's come back as a seed 4, three places behind him. (Meanwhile, Snake actually went up a seed.) Same goes for Jill and Kirby--the puffball rose 11 seeds after a first-round loss last year, while Jill's reward for giving him that loss was an 8-seed drop. Of course, the strangest rebound of the first-round exits has to be Squall. The most-hated main character in Final Fantasy history managed less votes against Snake than Knuckles (seed 8 this year) and even less than Aeris (seed 11), but he rose almost as high as Kirby to land in front of Auron. Which probably brands this contest a fraud to half the FF fans out there automatically. (Don't worry--I'm not one of them.) Finally, this version lists exactly who the returning characters managed to beat. If a losing character is in this year's tourney, his/her new seed is marked.
This last bit helps explain some of the odd seeding (Ryu moving in front of Lara makes more sense when you learn he met Samus in the second round), but certainly not all of it (Crono falling next to Dante makes less sense when you learn he beat Dante and Snake last year). Clearly this year's nominations--or at least the seedings--don't always agree with last year's voting population. Keep that in mind when you fill out your bracket. (Want more proof? Then here's one last interesting side note: Morrigan Aensland, Aya Brea, Tina Armstrong, Kyo Kusanagi, Strider Hiryu and Serious Sam all won a match last year, but were dropped this year. And two of them managed to beat returning characters: Strider, who beat Raziel, a 15th seed this year...and Tina, who beat Gordon. A 7.) |
